Question about FRS longevity

Hello all,

I've been having some serious oil leak issues and a mechanic told me I should think about trading my car in as these cars apparently don't last beyond 200,000 km.

My car is a 2015 FRS has 221,000 km on it, it's my main car. I oil change it 1000 km before it's due almost always (sometime 1500km), and do just about any repair or maintenance needed on it.

The car is paid for and I love it a lot. I have heard that the engine gets oil leaks around the timing chain (a mechanic described it as a type of sweat). He said it would take 3 days to repair this but it's not needed now.

So two questions, can this car get to 300,000 km and beyond with this kind of issue? Or, should I just get rid of it?

If it helps people in UK have 150K miles on the car and still running strong! No reported engine issues or oil leaks.But I haven't yet seen a car do 200K+ miles..or 300K Kms.

I wouldn't change it till the engine or a major part gives up as you have it all paid for and limited liability now.

From my experience Subaru engines are hard to kill if maintained properly. Our engines are fairly sturdy and robust. I've seen some Subaru engines well over 200k miles, but that's if you take care of it and don't beat the snot out of it like some people do.
So long as you keep up with the maintenance and oil services, I see no reason to consider getting a new car unless you want to. No reason to give up on a car just because its high mileage. However, depending on how the leak progresses, you may or may not have to have it fixed before 300k. Keep an eye on it and see where it takes you. If you find you are having to add a lot of oil between services, it might be worth considering having that service done if you plan to keep the car.

I wouldn't sell it, personally.

@xyrodon how big is the oil leak? You said it was a serious leak but if its just "sweating" as your mechanic is, then that's nothing. My car has had the small seepage behind the camshaft seal its whole life and I'd say it does nothing to affect the longetivity of the car, as long as you're keeping good oil in it.

The things that I'd say would affect the longevity of the car more is wear on the drivetrain components, body, mounts. Most cars are due for having mounts and bushings replaced or upgraded by 100,000 miles. Plus years of driving through salt and slush, you're likely to have parts rust off your engine rather than run into trouble with a miniscule leak.

Proper oil and overall maintenance and no telling how long it'll last. Hard driving will contribute to lesser miles.

All engines can develop seepage when the miles build up. Just don't let the oil level drop too low and all is fine. If you start getting puddles under it when parked then it is time t think about getting it fixed. There is no way it is a "three day" job.

As far as miles go, as stated, maintenance and how it is driven plays a much larger part than what kind of car it is. You mechanic is talking out of his ass.
There are many many cars on here running higher mileage than you have. Hell my 2014 STARTED it's track time at around that mileage!

In terms of caring for my car, it's mostly highway driven. Yes, I drive pretty damn fast but I have drifted once in my whole life on this car lol. Other than that, she's well taken care off.

My dealership had the engine out and back in for valve springs in less than 3 days, and they resealed the timing cover and did the clutch.

So 3 days to reseal the timing cover is absolute BS.

It's a 90 day job if I do it. 30 days for the first try. 30 days of avoiding redoing it because I fucked it up. Then 30 days again.

Oh, heck, an engine can run just fine covered with oil on the outside. Just make sure there is enough oil on the inside.

Bubba says the engine is good to go as long as it doesn't take more than a quart of oil a week.

If you can't see a difference in the oil level between oil changes interval, I wouldn't even bother to think about it.
