Exclamation Autobody Shop/Painting Near Me ? Issue with Painting Carbon Fiber Hood?

im getting the VIS Racing AMS Carbon Fiber Hood and i will be getting it painted Raven black to match my FR-S ... my guy said that hes worried the paint won't stay well and may come off but he has to talk to his painter first bc he doesnt like dealing with Carbon Fiber Parts.... any issues that you have noticed or something i should tell the painter to take into account when attacking this job?

ANYONE YOU CAN RECOMMEND TO ME TO PAINT MY HOOD NEAR ME ? I LIVE IN 11378 Maspeth, NY aka Queens

Take it to another body shop. They obviously have no idea what they're doing if they don't feel confident in their ability to paint a carbon fiber (likely fiberglass with carbon fiber overlay) piece.

You're in NY. I'm sure you can find at least a handful of shops that have been sponsors to one of many tuner cars in the area.

I've been wondering about this for a while now. I want to get a carbon hood and have it painted to match my Ultramarine, but I'm not sure how hard it is to remove paint from carbon if I ever choose to go back.

Also, what are the differences between these two hoods? They look extremely similar but the VIS hood is almost $300 more than the Seibon one.

I had my rexpeed lip kit painted raven and it was carbon fiber to start with. Its easily possible as many others have stated is basically like painting fiberglass. Although since it is carbon fiber depeding on how thin the paint is you may be able to see the texture of the weave of the carbon in certain angles in certain light. But again doubtful. I thought i saw some on my side skirts at certain angles but i really had to be looking for it.

Carbon is paintable regardless if it has clear coat or no clear coat, I've painted carbon fiber numerous times and you usually you use a primer or base coat(white/ lighter color). Afterwards you shoot the paint you are planning to use. As like others have suggested, go to another shop who won't warrant their work just because its carbon fiber.

Also usually you can't revert back to carbon unless you can sand off all the paint and clear coat to the point where you finally hit the clear gel coat so I wouldn't recommend it at all, its pretty much a permanent process painting carbon, better off getting a fiberglass instead if your painting.

Block sand with 180/320. Prime with urethane primer. Prep 600/800 then base/clear. Blocking and priming first will help keep the carbon weave pattern from showing under the painted section and keep it looking smooth like the rest of the car

For all of you buying carbon fiber hoods:
1 - The hood on this car is the absolute lightest I have ever experienced: Aluminum....

2 - If you are buying one I assume it is only for the cool CF look, otherwise See #1
(long story short: If you want to paint it......WHY???)
