Don't know that I'd call a 5,000 mile update a "Long Term Update" personally (that's about 3 months of driving for me). Car sure looks beat up underneath for only <6,000 miles.
No real surprises except the fuel mileage. I realize they have a stick but the difference between their mileage and mine of 200,000 miles is about a 25% decrease. It represents about $4,600 of additional fuel costs over that 200,000 miles. Good video though and obviously they use their car differently than I do (and probably differently than 90% of owners).

^ Yeah it did look bit tired underneath, but as someone who has never seen snow on a road before, I'm not sure how a car should look after being exposed to salt.
Long term for press tho. They have a lot of cars to get through |

The underside looks average for a car in the rust belt regardless of miles. Folks who can let a vehicle sit for the 4 sucky winter months in the Midwest do.

As I commented on that video, I can't believe they didn't change the endlink hardware. After a year or two of winter, you need a Sawzall to remove them.

Yeah, the gas mileage is disappointing, but then I remember I'm running E85 and getting that or worse on my FRS and still don't have that power or torque, so I figure it's worth it... of course at least E85 is cheaper than Premium.
I do wonder how you could do taking it a bit easier. I'm experimenting with my car on the current tank seeing how good I can get on E85 if I always shift by 3k RPM (I can get away with it thanks to flat Houston driving). That means I settle in at 69 mph on the highway which is at least 4 over the limit on most local highways. It'll be interesting to see if it makes any appreciable difference. But it is admittedly not as fun not being able to do my usual second gear pull. |

To be fair, Jack indicated that the highway mileage they were recording was at an average speed of 85 mph, far beyond most area speed limits. I'd imagine there is a sigifigant improvement just dropping 10-15 mph to 70-75 mph cruise, which is about the best you can 'get away with' in my area without having the book thrown at you..

Haha, right? Just curiosity for a tank's worth. I don't think it'll make a big dif on mine with E85 anyway.

I get 27mpg in my GR86, but I drive 75 on the highway. Driving conditions: no snow, 90% highway, drive like a monkey for the rest of the 10%

Out of 560 fuel-ups (the majority were 9 to 11 gallon fillups) I've had only 10 that were below 30MPH and of those 8 were 29+. Lowest was 27.6 and that was with 2 hours spent in a barely moving traffic jam.

The fuel economy bit was probably the only surprising point in the review. My stage 1 WRX gets around 30mpg straight highway cruising ~72mph (my typical cruise speed on 65 or 70 limit highways) ... I'll be shocked if the GR86 can't do near the same.
Probably just the stupidly high highway speeds + any benefits to "cruising" at lower speeds on country roads negated by moments of spiritedness. Quote:

My daily commute averages 55 miles per hour with the one-way 40 miles varying from 25MPH to 65MPH.
About 20% of my mileage are road trips that are between 65 and 80MPH. I rarely exceed 80MPH because of local "super speeder" laws.
