Well now, I finally got off my lazy butt and went out and sprayed some weeds. Yep, I used Roundup, so now, over the next few days, I'll have something to do by just watching them die. -

I miss spraying Paraquat, why, because on a hot sunny day you could watch the weeds start to die within minutes.

Yes, I NOW know that Roundup and Paraquat are bad actors (non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and Parkinsons disease), however, back in the day I sprayed hundreds of gallons of each one or those and we didn't know -

After looking at my firewood pile out back and seeing all of the molting shells from teh cicadas, I'll officially be doing nothing outside of my house for a month. I'm dreading washing my car this weekend. BroodX is back already.

We have heard one cicada. That's it. Knock on wood.

I love that somehow the states below me get wrecked and I've never heard of this before.
I'll ask here because it's more fun to talk to people I know than to read Google articles-

What is the big deal with the cicadas? I know nothing- teach me

I hate bugs. I just remember the crunch under my feet as I ran to my car every morning in 2004. I lived in a condo in the middle of a national park forest so it might have just been extra bad there. At my current house, I see about 2 dozen "shells" hanging on my grill and firewood covers. *shudder*

They're not aggressive bugs. Just big, loud, dumb, and (if you hate bugs) haunting.

Is more of a nuisance. They make quite a bit of noise and they cause some damage to young trees. They are harmless since they don't bite or sting you. They're just annoying. I used to collect their shells when I was living in Honduras, it was just cool.

Cicadas live most of their lifecycle underground and emerge every 17 years to mate, shed and die. There are different broods so areas of the country see them at different times.

They are harmless other than making a mess everywhere.

I remember the first time I saw a cicada in NY. Apparently there is only one brood that extends that far north and it was a big deal because it only happens once every other decade or something. I was like wtf is that thing!?! If you are not used to seeing bugs bigger than your finger it kind of creepy.

I couldn't imagine riding my motorcycle with cicadas around. The first time I saw one was about 10 years ago during a trip to MI. I was like WTF is that thing.

Reminds me of the time when my dad bought our first home in Honduras, if you may know, most houses in Honduras are made our on cinder blocks, and the roof is made of some type of clay material, and whoever builds the house better be good at covering the spaces between the house structure and where the roof sits. Anyway, after some time I started hearing little growling noises, almost chihuahua little growls. Turn on the lights and see these little shits on the walls of the house.

They are loud as hell and even worse when they fight over sections of wall territory. Sometimes I would be trying to sleep and one of them would fall in my bed. I got so annoyed in the end that I would just grab them and throw them across the room. Great mosquito and roach control. But a nightmare do deal with once they decided to fall on your bed and have a field trip along your body. They can grow up to 5 inches with bulky little bodies.
