I need turbo goodness in my life
It would be interesting to know what the break even price would be. Is it 10 kits? 20 kits? 100 kits? I really have no ideal what type of volume these products have, nor do I know the cost differential to go through the CARB process and gaining customers versus not. I also don’t know if the bulk of sales are in the past, such that it makes less sense to do it now, or if it makes more sense to do it now because there will be no more production years for the FA20, so they can make sure a CARB kit applies to all years, and because more owners may be able to afford a turbo kit or want to catch up to the FA24’s power.

Regardless of all that unknown conjecture, it is definitely possible to design a CARB legal turbo kit. CARB seems lightyears ahead of where they were in the past with making a reasonable path for getting CARB legal parts to market. I believe much of this has to do with the advent of computer controllers like ECUTEK, which is what is actually lightyears ahead of older air/fuel controllers. Works makes a CARB legal turbo kit for the 86 by building the turbo kit off the overpipe, so the catalysts aren’t removed or modified. Flyin’ Miata makes a CARB legal turbo kit for the ND Miata. They provide four options: buy their downpipe with a new cat, or send in your header, and they will cut it off and weld on your cat to a downpipe, or cut off your cat and send just that to them to save on shipping costs, or cut and weld your own downpipe using unfinished sections they ship with the kit. The Greddy turbo kit for the 86 has a test pipe in place of a catted pipe, which is only sold on JDM versions, but they could have made a CARB legal kit, IMO.

There you have it, full boost by about ~3500 RPM....giving you nearly 4000 RPM of powerband!

The new G500X, comparable in performance to the G25-660 turbocharger in spool, is among the fastest spooling 550+ whp turbochargers on the market! #RealResults #ProvenPerformance

SBD thinks it's illegal to sell turbo kits now. L O L.

"99.9% of the kits on the market currently are illegal for USA sell, under the current guidelines being pursued." - SBD
