Thoughts on new Corolla?

I had a new Corolla S for a rental back in 2010 and absolutely HATED the car in nearly all aspects. The new one looks pretty good except for a massive wheel gap. I wonder if it will drive better? The auto in the Corolla I had was THE WORST AUTO EVER so I hope that the CVT fixes that. Of course rowing my own with a 6 speed would be the optimial choice. So, what are your first impressions for this latest unveiling?

Mine: Looks MUCH better and the interior looks more upscale. Only issue with the design is that offroader wheel gap. If they fix that I believe this would be a decent looking small family car.

Exterior is what I kinda expected it to be. Improved but still not a looker. I don't like the interior tbh. Upscale but not clean giving more a cheap feel. I'm sure it'll be a good family sedan.

Looks like a Civic.

Also, CVT = Fail if you are trying to do anything but cruise around town

CVT should be acceptable in a family car so it doesn't take that much away does it? Simulated shifts are welcomed compared to the Nissan CVT's that just go. Doesn't feel natural in a gas powered car. In the Leaf it doesn't bother me to not shift just due to the nature of that car.

Looks like a perfect successor. Cheap, reliable. I'm sure it looks better in person, because it has massive overbite on the pictures. However, I like the edgier look than the past soft/round curves.

Massive sellers here, everybody who has one can speak good about their ownership experience (don't mention driving dynamics, lol!)..True story, back in 2002 my mom bought a ford contour, I made her return that turd and he got a 2001 corolla instead, 13 years later, it was the best decision she ever did, never had a problem except maintenance. Though it's getting quite rusty under there..

I like that manufacturers are realizing their base models don't have to look like complete turds

There has been a trend towards buying smaller lately anyways. Remember when the Corolla used to be the smallest car offered by Toyota (in the US)? They found that people would pay a little more, so the increased the size of the car a little and introduced the Echo sub-compact (which has since been replaced by the Yaris). People are looking for a little more fit and finish in their smaller cars, and Toyota and the other makers are happy to fill this need.

No offense to anybody who drives a Corolla, but I speak the truth and the worst thing about Corollas isn't necessarily the car, but the people who drive Corollas! They are the most clueless bad drivers on the road. I live in LA and visit my parents who are in the SGV and there are tons of older Asian Corolla drivers (I can say this cause I'm Asian) and they suck as drivers... my blood pressure goes up 20 pts everytime I have to drive in the SGV cause of these Corolla drivers. I'm generally a pretty easy going person, but I do have a passionate disdain for the large majority of Corolla drivers. For the association with these drivers alone I will NEVER buy a Corolla. People sometimes hate on Prius drivers, but Corolla drivers are by far the worst.

By the way, I know the twins evolved from the Corolla but it was just a different Corolla all together.

My first car was a Corolla. 165k miles like a champ, and current owner has it well over 220k.

Pros:
- I like the idea of CVT and 6-speed MT.
Cons:
- S model is 184" long. Lexus GS 350 is 190" long. And Corolla is a compact car?
- I don't know what "S" stands for, but if it stands for "Sport", then I don't understand why it has less power than LE Eco.
- Like the other person said above, it looks like Civic. And to me, Civic looks better. Euro spec looks much better.

Just by looking at the pictures and specs, I would choose Civic over Corolla.

I think it looks interesting. Definitely a departure from the boring designs they've been using in the past. (10th gen being a more proportioned 9th gen, 9th gen being a larger taller, narrower 8th gen, further back they've all just been massaged versions of each other)

I disliked the current 10th gen design because it looked like just a reproportioned 9th gen (not to mention it looked old and outdate already) and the interior materials quality was absolute crap. I have a 9th gen 06 XRS so I know all about the whole plastic interior (which is expected) but the 10th gen material quality was noticeably worse. The XRS was nothing compared to the first XRS either (with the 2ZZ-GE high strung motor which was fun).

I wonder why people think it looks nothing like the furia concept (which seemed to have universal praise). The S model looks almost identical minus the jacked up 4x4 ride height, smaller wheels, no window tint and toned down headlights. All the bodylines are there but seem to be hidden due to the color choices. (same criticism from the impreza and the Prius C concepts to their production counterparts. Impreza was a little toned down with smaller wheels and higher right height. Prius C concept looked like it had a modellista bodykit on it, larger wheels, lowered and LED lights. All that disappeared from the production car)

The non-S model front end looks like a Scion tC. So theres proof that the Scion tC is a Corolla Coupe Ok maybe not but it definitely could be. I want to know how it drives. Its probably slow as crap but that doesn't matter on this car. I'm curious to see how the CVT feels as I hated every CVT ive ever been in (and the constant buzziness and locked RPM at like 6000 when it reaches the desired speed).

This new Corolla will sell and its actually the most interesting looking one in awhile.

My wife used to have a Corolla when we were dating. She loved it.

I drove it a few times and can see the appeal to non-car enthusiasts. Easy size to maneuver, decent pep off the line, stone cold reliable, good gas mileage, cheap, and easy to maintain.

If this new model is more of the same, it'll be a hit.

I think I enjoyed nearly every Euro design Honda, Toyota, and etc while living in the UK over their American counterparts. Coming back to the US I'd always be appalled by the horrific cars going down the road. Beautiful cars were a rare sight. (I specifically remember the first time I saw an HHR… )
