I still occasionally have nightmares from my 2 weeks on a jury. It was NOT worth the pay. Sorta glad we were made to finish up on a Saturday - my employer only offered 2 weeks of covered jury duty pay. Though I guess not all even do that, so I guess it worked out. Except the nightmares.

Last time the judge was so anal they made us, like 300 people, all stay for three or so days in a row, come into the actual courtroom, and sit like an audience while she and the two parties' lawyers questioned the original set of jurors and slowly replaced them with members of the audience.

Fortunately I was never called up from the audience. It was a case regarding some gang murder thing and she was saying it could take several months of court days.

Maybe it was because of the way you were dressed?

Sadly no. They were just calling by random order. The judge was so anal though that for any excuses people gave she would say she was just going to postpone to a certain date in a few months, not excuse them lol

That is the way it has always been in Superior court. I did the same thing in the early 1980's with a stabbing case. Started Monday morning. Took a full week to get the jury. When they were done with jury selection Friday afternoon, I was one of two people not called up and excused.

I was surprised we met on Friday. Usually judges play golf on Fridays.

I have never been selected to sit on a panel. My occupation is/was a guaranteed strike.

Oh, and for the truly pedantic, it's not an audience, it's the "pool."

From the "pool" the two sides select members of the "panel" through a process called "voir dire."

The folks who are "empanelled" hear the case.

So, the next time you're called up you can enjoy your swim in the pool.

Yes, the jury pool.

That one time in Superior court is my only time I had to report. I've had a few municipal court summons where you call in, but never had to report. I always had a high number.

This time I have to be available the entire month of February, and my number is like 523. I'm for sure going in. My guess here in Caldwell it will be either DUI , drug possession, or property theft. Those are our big crimes.

I hate those open ended commitments. It used to be you were called to show up on one morning or afternoon. They would drag everyone (150 people) into an auditorium, take groups of 20 to 25 to serve as pool members and if you weren't empanelled or called for one of the pools you were done. Now it's an open ended process that lasts weeks. All to go in and have one of the lawyers look at my juror information card and say "you're excused."
