Damn tapatalk..

Not a 997..but you get the idea

Tbh an unfair comparison

The 997 is the clear winner.

I think it would be a great idea to look at the costs of 5 years of ownership rather than

Brz + mods vs 997

In 5 years you will see that the cost to own the 997 is substantially greater. Is it worth it? Only you could answer that one.

HISTORY

Grew up in a household with a 450SEL 6.9 and a Datsun Z car with all Bob Sharp parts on it( yeah my mom was fast back in the day). Dad was a in the closet suspension guy who loved out cornering his neighbors with 472 cubic inch Cadillacs and American "floppy" sedans.

Fast fwd: That same Z car became my graduation car which was held onto for that reason and later I did the VW route before it was the Hipster crowd, bagged, 205's on 12inch (wide)wheels scene. I autocrossed it all the way to Nationals and podiumed.

Had a 07 GTI with Bilstein Rally-race struts and Carrera ( back then called coil-over springs ), Drake racing headers, Recaro KRS seats, Wilwood brakes, YOkohama 008 RS-II's.

Traded up to a 88 GLI with rare G70 motorsports supercharger, Bilsteins, Gillets exhaust and SUpersprint header, Schrick 272 Cam, Audi intake.

A friend called and said he knew a guy who was getting divorced and I bought his 86 944 Turbo for 7500.00 instead of the 15k he was asking because his wife answered the door with the title in her hand and was getting back at him. >>>> FF, 40k later its a ITE car in SCCA and NASA and 2500 lbs, 350whp, full cage, 305's, Bilstein shocks.

Got married, sold car.

FF>>>> 2007 while shooting video for Speed channel at Sebring the wife brings home a 2003 Boxster S. ( she was a finance mgr at a highline dealer)

Hmmnnnnn ? Wow this thing was decent. Faster than a stage 2 LGT !

Kept it 5 years.

Bought BRZ. FF(fast forward ) dumped 20k into BRZ without forced induction.
Ohlins, BBS, AP Brakes, Recaro's, all pillowball and poly bushings, custom front control arms, got a decent lap time out of it and ...................

The realization that if I want to make it fast fast I had to spend XX amount on Supercharger/Turbo and then cage and then....what if I blow up the 7k trans, or the 8k heads? I would spend a LOT of money JUST to get it back to normal, to only have to sell it . THEN it wont be worth jack unless you wait a year for the "perfect" buyer.

THE WIFE FACTOR.

*** Keep in mind that since 2003 I have always had to own a Subaru so that we can test and develop parts. This was Dec 2013. I knew the 2015 WRX was coming.*****

Dinner table early Dec 2013-
WIFE-
" so let me get this straight.......you want to get a 6 year old Porsche, a car in which you make no parts for, ..AND when the new WRX comes out get that too..? "

ME-
" Yes and I will agree to 3 foot rubs per week, 2 Belize vacations and will take out the trash and do the dishes on a regular basis ! "

A few puppy dog faces and general car guy "close" look later and I was granted the ultimate permission !

Mind you a 997S conversation a few years earlier resulted in the OPPOSITE answer !

CAR FOR CAR.

I miss my BRZ on a daily basis like eating a 200 double stuffs with no milk !
I miss the handling. I do NOT miss the lack or power. The Cayman S makes me smile EVERY TIME I drive it. I left it stock for 6 months, even though Bilstein sent me Pss9's before my Cayman even arrived. Stock it handles VERY WELL. Stock it stops VERY WELL. Stock it is comfortable with a Bose stereo that does NOT make you EVER think about upgrading. It did EVERYTHING the BRZ did modified, but better. Granted maybe only a hair better, but with no drama. Insurance went down 35% !

Modified with Pss9, Tubi exhaust , OZ wheels with Michelin PSS and ENDLESS pads ( stop like Pagids with no squeal ) its amazing to drive.

Once you get to this level of car its not about the same thing anymore. Then again I am getting older. I did my SCCA , NASA, IMSA racing, autocrossing originally out of high school and instructing etc.

Fact is its difficult to compare these 2 cars, but if the OP can afford the 997-S ...GET IT ! You will not be disappointed. Less mods needed,..BUT those mods you want WILL cost more, but the reward is felt 10 fold. Just dont mod it too far because if you sell it you dont get that back. Mod as much as you care to loose is the general rule.

Yes I hope to own a BRZ some day again. Maybe when it has more power from the factory but for now I love the Cayman-S.

Once my son is in College a 997.2 GT3 is the plan but thats going to require a LOT more foot rubs and I am getting older so the puppy dog face thing will be a long shot ! By then it will cost less too. ( thats the key really)

I was extremely tempted to get a 997-S. Even found a great deal on one an elderly lady was selling locally. But alas, my wife would've killed me.

I know that, no doubt if I bought a 911 I wouldn't be happy stock. I'd enjoy it for 2-3weeks and then the mods would come starting with a call to TechArt :P

I'd have an expensiver car and more expensive mods. Essentially the same game with higher stakes.

Does the Cayman drive as lively, or light on its feet feeling like the Toybaru?

Nice Cayman! The GT3 (any of them 996, 997.1, 997.2, RS, 991) are where it's at. Love the standard 911, Cayman, Boxster, but I personally enjoy the GT3 experience so much more (even though a standard 997 or Cayman is beyond my driving capabilities!). Only slight downside for a GT3 buyer (other than stiffer ride, no back seat, lips scrapes, the usual stuff) is they don't depreciate like the regular 911's. Really nice 996 GT3's still go for over $55K.

Has a heavier steering feel but yes feels lite on its feet. Turn is in amazing and the overall feeling and seating position is very much "driver priority". When you put your foot on the brakes in the STOCK car its better than the BRZ with lines and the AP endurance kit ….BY FAR. Its a ROCK solid handling car with very good power. A roll on with most cars on the highway results better than most would expect because it doesn't weigh much and the gearing keeps the revs in the power band and its slippery in the air. Its no joke for sure. Plenty of bottom end tq too.

And for that same 15k in power mods to the BRZ you can do a 3.8 motor from Rick Deman which bumps you to about 385hp ( which is like 450 in other cars). Its hard to compare Porsche power to most other cars because they maximize the gearing in a way unlike most manufactures.

THats my .02 worth.
