Right!? Maybe they assume if you're racing you're buying tires anyway. Still you're only as strong as the weakest link.

By the time someone puts $10+k into the Supra it may be faster in a straight line from a roll, but the C8 is the better platform overall. I’ll even wager the C8 will be more enjoyable and engaging with a DCT, with the mid-engine, with a torque NA engine, with the shorter hood, with better traction and handling, and with a more cockpit interior.
I’ll second this. Everyone on the internet is hammering the c8 for having a DCT. The supra’s transmission is light years behind a dual clutch, yet it seems to get a pass?

I’ll never own a “performance” car with a torque converter. I can live with a DCT.

People severely underestimate modern torque converters. There's a lot of high end cars from luxury to performance that have opted for the defacto zf 8hp for a reason and the Supra is no different. Slushboxes might have been shit twenty years+ ago but they've come a long way since then. If it's anything like the 86s AT which will lock up as soon as it's possible, even letting you lug the engine, then in practice it won't be different than a DCT in end result. The fluid coupling component would (should) be practically be nonexistent if you drove manually except at the lowest speeds.

I see nothing wrong with the choice to opt for the 8HP when Tada and his team previously used the 960E for the 86 considering the former is quite literally the best torque converting AT on the market. Add in reliability and wear considerations for most AT transmissions and it's no surprise Toyota opted for it. Even moreso when considering the Supra's beyond expectations performance. It's not only a testament to the transmission's engineering and design, but the transmission tuning itself. There's a good reason the AT 86 is also held in high regard amongst its owners, and as said earlier, I have no doubts the engineering team carried over their experience to the 8HP.

I highly doubt Toyota had any say in which AT they got. BMW has been using the 8HP line exclusively since ~2012. No way they’d spend effort on getting to know a new transmission and learn how to make it behave well behind the B58.

That saidi agree that the 8HP is a beast of an auto. BMW arguably tunes it the best too. It’s amazingly quick and crisp in their cars (depending on the drive mode). The same tranny in a Dodge Charger, ehhhh. Not great not terrible.

Thanks for being on my side, but I wouldn’t say the DCT is lightyears. The ZF8 is probably the best torque converter transmission, but I would still give some advantage to the dual clutch. Mazda says the torque converter can be made to be faster. Let’s just say it wasn’t one of my bigger points—more noteworthy.

they put drag slicks on and barely bettered their times. Technology is getting in the way, not traction.

The 8HP is lightning quick., quicker than it has any right to be. With an aftermarket tune they can shift in 100ms. That’s as quick as the M3’s DCT.

Supposedly it went for over asking price. Several people have called the dealer to ask about the selling price, but they will not disclose it.

Yep there are plenty of people bitching about the Supra being automatic. The obnoxious "Manual or die bruh," "Not a real car unless it has a manual," but then these are the same idiots going "Bro GTR is GOD!" "Nothing beats the GTR" "GTR is my dream car," seemingly not caring that it is automatic.

looks like they tried it a bunch of different ways, then blamed the rain. Basically something was not letting them rev high enough to spin the rear tires at launch. I bet there is something like the pedal dance in their that they need to figure out.

No, I’m just the former—the obnoxious manual or die bruh. GTRs are cool, but ehh for driver engagement. It is more like a video game, a numb experience, where you just hold on to the wheel and press the gas. Seeing a sports car without a stick and three pedals feels odd like the feeling of seeing one of these electric powered bicycles, scooters and skateboards, where people just sit or stand motionless while cruising down the road; it is an odd, unnatural sight.
