So I got a flat last weekend and found the spare that came with my performance package did not fit over my front brakes. I bought it brand new too, so I've been lugging this useless spare around for no reason. The leak wasn't too fast so I managed to limp it home by pulling over and filing the tire with my AC compressor every 10 miles. I wasn't about to pay for a 100 mile tow, which is beyond the spare's range anyways.

I called the Subaru dealership about getting a replacement and they've been helpful so far. I'm going to bring in the stock one and switch it out for the performance package spare, so that's all fine and dandy.

So fair warning, check your spare if you haven't yet. Save yourself some headache!

Edit: Never mind, I think I actually just accidentally swapped spares with someone at my last track day...

Who has a spare for their 86 GTS and how did you go about it ????

Supposably a spare from a XV/crosstrek is suppose to fit but doesn't really fit in the well to good.

Stamped on the rim is 17x6JJ (5x100)
Tyre 185/65R17

The manual and people that have put the spare on the rear both adamantly say DON'T!
The traction control does not like it one little bit.

TC is not the issue. LSD is. Even relatively small differences in tire diameter will make LSD diff work all the time, even when driving straight, not just in turns, which will make it overheat, which will make diff oil degrade, which will ramp up diff gears wear by a lot, easily killing not exactly cheapest part to replace.
Yes, not using spacesaver in rear is mentioned in manual (which too few people read), and similar bit is for other cars having LSD diffs too (even AWD & FWD ones, though obviously regarding wheels on both or on front axle depending on where those diffs are). Similar provisions are also for 4WD SUVs with transfer cases, as those also can be damaged by having different wheels front or rear. And as it's mentioned in manual, such way to kill it is certainly not warranty case.

I think the concern is when the wheel speed sensors detect significant difference with 0% traction loss, it can trip limp mode

This is very true but it is the traction control that puts up the noticeable fuss.
The whole trick is to drive as little as possible no matter what wheel it is on. People that slap it on and drive for days are just asking for trouble. Far to many do though.

That's odd, I had to use space saver spare on the front right of my 2017 BRZ PP last year and it mounted up no prob and I was on my way. They musta put the wrong spare in yours I guess.

Well this confirms I have been carrying a useless spare in my trunk. Time to get rid of it.
