FA20 to FA20T conversion
This might've been discussed in the forum before but i cannot find it.
How hard would it be to upgrade the FA20 with wrx engine internals And add an after market turbo? Except for the turbo kit everything would be OEM. That would yield low end torque curve i want from the wrx. How many parts would need to be replaced? I'm thinking pistons, rods, cams? What else? |

I'd be surprised if the piston was different, I suspect the rod is the only mechanical change, a more robust and slightly shorter part to drop the compression

Interesting, i've never thought about that but
It would make sense i guess. I cant believe this subject is nowhere to be found. I want the torque i'll never get out of the Current compression. |

I think its because the aftermarket would probably be a cheaper solution and better suited to a person's wants.

Just call up subaru and price out a short block from the fa20dit. The pistons are most likely different due to the different injection setup as direct injection relies on the crown shape for fuel mixing.

If you swap out internals at all, you will be losing some of the reliability that is typically perceived in an engine built by subaru.
If all you are wanting is the low end torque, just get a smaller turbo. The factory wrx turbo runs out of steam pretty quickly at high rpm's, which is the trade off for making boost so early. The fa20dit engine with a "Aftermarket turbo" will no longer have the same torque curve as the factory engine unless you get one with similar specs as the factory one.. I know you are talking about swapping out internals instead of the entire engine, but this thread may still help if you haven't seen it: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=69032 |
