Are the differences in sensors between model years significant enough that this is necessary, or is it more of a precaution? The new engine has most of the sensors installed so I wasn't originally planning on swapping them all over.

By the way, I don't know how the thanks feature works on this board but I really do appreciate all the help from you guys.
I would google Subaru parts and then look up the sensors most parts will have a item fits tab and it will tell you the years the sensor fits. just to play it safe.

Yes it is direct. Just make sure it is AT to AT or MT to Mt or else you will need to do some parts swapping.

would a 2014 also suffice, the 2016 was sold and now there is only a 2014 left :'( i know as far as the coilpacks are different but i doubt that'd be much of an issue right
