Question New odometer

Hey there, kind of a dumb question/situation but figure I can try asking here.

So I got a new odometer off ebay... since it's obviously from a crushed car
it comes with all sortas of error codes & put the car into limp mode when I plug it in.

Anyone know what I need to do to clear it?... when I on this I just get videos of ppl fixing stuff on their car & car relearns...... or drive it till the computer learn my car is fine???

Cuz the moment I put the old odometer on, the car is back to normal. *never thought they store the codes in the odometer, i reset the codes with OBD tool but it still stays on in the odometer.

Thanks if anyone can chime in on this.

Nope, else would I said it’s a dumb question?

Just thought it’s a easy way to update the instrument cluster.

I guess I’m an old geezer now.

I'm an old geezer too. But, let's say my car has 280,000 miles on it. I want to sell it but with the high milage I wouldn't get much for it. So, why don't I just buy a new odometer off Ebay with only 45,000 miles on it and install it on my car?

I could get alot more money for it.

I don't think that's the intent here. 10+ years of post history and I believe it's a genuine question. WNDSRFR, you are correct that it's not quite that simple as it creates the need for disclaimers and flags on your title. But OP seems to be looking for the solution to the limp problem and codes. Do you have a history of the cluster?

Calm down it’s like good 20 years before these would be worth anything at all. + DMV & Carfax has all the mile records, do you think ppl don’t check? ….

Since I have never try to swap a instrument cluster in any car before, isn’t this a legit question?

I mean there are ppl posting about swapping theirs to 2017+ cluster too… I can’t be the only one with this question.

Pretty sure there was a thread on this a few years back. On phone so searching is ruff but if I recall the new cluster has to be synced to the BCM.

yep, too many shady places rolling back odometers on cars, there's all sorts of protections in place to make it a lot harder.

The engine works totally fine, it’s just the codes stores in cluster basically puts it in limp mode.

I put my original back & the car kind slowly relearned that’s it’s totally fine. …. & it’s back in normal now.

Looking at how to sync BCM now. *I asked some random shop that told me they can do it for 800.

There are threads on how to do it someplace on here. I just don’t have enough signal to search properly. Hit and miss when I can even post.
There may even be a reference on how to swap the cluster in the service manuals that Ultra has linked.

Hmm that is extremely strange. Maybe the gauge cluster is where fault codes are stored? When I swapped clusters from a crashed car I didn’t run into this problem. Is it possible to return the cluster and buy another one? Maybe better luck on the 2nd try lol.
