Electronic exhaust valve control

Hey

I plan to buy an exhaust system for my BRZ soon.

I do prefer to have control over the exhaust loudness like in my previous BMW. However, I'm inexperienced with car modding in general.

Is there a way to install an electronic exhaust valve control on an after market exhaust?

Should I go to a local shop and get a custom exhaust built with that module? or is it possible to install it on any muffler?

All what I want is to have the option to keep it quiet (so I don't wake people up at night).

If the answer to the above is "NO" .. is it worth installing an after market exhaust for performance gains? or is it purely for sound on these cars?

Before installing an exhaust, I'm getting an OFT + UEL header.

Yes.
Yes.
It's all for sound. Hardly any hp gains with tune and headers. Some people think peak hp translate to useable power.

Google, or searching could have given you your answer faster than my typing.

Also I highly recommend you sell your car and go back to BMWs.

No.
No.
It'll give you LARGE hp gains with/out tune and headers. It's a fact that peak hp translates to usable power.

Google, or searching could have shown I'm full of crap faster than my typing.

Also I highly recommend you sell your car and go back to BMWs.
^ Except that.
That I agree with 100%

If you can't go fast go loud.
On these cars the input to the muffler and one of the outputs are close together. A good shop can put a bypass with an electric valve.

Google Varex mufflers and QTP (Quick Time Performance) cutout valves then go talk to a good exhaust shop, but you're probably better off piecing together a nice setup as there are lots of options for this platform.
A header and a tune is a good place to start, but most importantly, search this forum, the wisdom you seek is all here grasshopper.

Hey, tough crowd here today, right, TOtS -

I'm a bit confused as to why you are changing your exhaust system -

If you are looking for just an increase in sound, an axle back or cat back modification will do that.

If your looking for a bit more power, a header and tune will do that.

If you are happy with the present sound and performance and you just want to make a lot of racket from time to time, any muffler shop will fix you up with a cut-out.

Your call -

I'm not after peak HP gains, mostly looking to flatten the torque curve and improve my acceleration. I understand these cars don't go fast without a $6k supercharger.

I would go back to BMWs if they had cars under $50k that are as fun as a BRZ

Are you recommending keeping the stock system and just installing a bypass to get a muffler delete sound on demand?

Yeah definitely a tough crowd lol

With modding the car overall I'm looking for better acceleration (and hopefully eliminate the torque dip).

I'm not sure if the exhaust can help with that, but I would also enjoy a nice sound when driving.

Well, it's my understanding that with a good aftermarket header and associated other exhaust pieces, plus a tune, one can help reduce the torque dip and increase the power by a few HP.

Not that these modifications are going to plaster you against the back of your seat nor make it sound like a finely tuned race car.

The downside is that these modifications cost money, a catless system may get you into trouble with air quality regulations in your area and you may be denied certain warranty work if it pertains to the engine.

I'd recommend a free-er flowing, drop in air filter and a modest sounding catback or axle back muffler system.

Now, I also understand that if you want to get any significant power gains from a FA20 you have to force feed the engine.

some exhausts already have an electronic exhaust valve/bypass built in, you just need to determine what you want to bypass before deciding on what to buy.

i've been watching this thread in hopes that there's a solution somewhere i haven't found. i want the oem exhaust sound, but also want the capability to switch to another exhaust that's got some more of my own preferred version of noise.

I'm kind of surprised you got such a shitty response.

Here's what you need to know:

1. The only exhaust component that provides a useful performance improvement when changed is the headers. Doing this also requires you to run a tune. Headers + e85 tune is worth ~28whp.

2. You can leave everything stock except the headers and it's about as quiet as its going to be with catless headers.

3. Yes, you can have an exhaust shop weld in an electronic cut out and wire up a switch. This can be done to your stock exhaust or to any aftermarket exhaust.

4. There is no benefit to running no muffler, so running a cutout on this platform is basically dumb, but if you want to make it loud with a switch, go for it. Straight piped 4-bangers sound like shit though.

5. You should definitely buy another BMW. The new Z4 coupe (Supra) looks nice.
