You had a 4 lug super beetle? Our family vw as a kid was a '61. I think it had the same engine as the singer.

We had all Volkswagens. At one time, all in running condition, we had:

- a '59 bus that took the four of us from Warwick, New York to Dauphin Island, Alabama in '67. Was still running as a utility vehicle on the farm/airstrip in '82

- a '61 beetle which my dad eventually gave to me to learn on when I was nine. Actually, that one only lasted a couple more years after that.

- '69, '71 beetles

- Dad bought my mom a new '73 super beetle with the auto stick thing. That was the only new car we ever had. I remember that he paid three grand for it.

Then he bought the olive green '75 at a police auction as-is, and we towed it home. It was the first year with fuel injection. He bought the factory manual but just couldn't figure out why the injectors stuck open, flooding the sump with gas. It was my first success troubleshooting when I figured out that one of the injectors was shorted. That short caused the other three to lock open. He was so proud of me that he bragged me up to all his work colleagues, and paid me for being his professional mechanic. My mom gave it to me when he passed just before my sixteenth birthday.

I love those old bugs. Such cool little cars. Our '61 was red, and Every time I washed it the white car towels were red. My older brother and I were pretty bummed when my dad traded it in when he got the Datsun pickup in '74.
