i'd highly recommend getting a board with 4 memory slots, though a little difficult in the m-itx form factor. makes upgrading later on easier. with windows 7, 8gb was enough. with windows 10 and newer games, even 16gb is getting to be the bare minimum.

i've also had 2 sticks of memory go bad on me and cause random blue screens, so i prefer more and smaller modules. cheaper to replace when they crap out.

i also support the idea of an OS drive and a 'game' drive. i'm not all that far off from dadhawk-- i try to keep the OS drive relatively small(i usually run a 128-320gb drive) so i'm not even temped to try to use it as a game drive at any point. forcing me to keep other drives for storage also helps significantly when i butcher the OS drive to the point i need to reload it. all my files stay on the other drives, and i can be up and running again in a few hours instead of weeks trying to figure out which files were lost.

good call on the modular power supply. it took way too long for them to start making them! makes wiring much much simpler!

Decided to ditch that ultra slim case for something bigger. Played with the idea of an AMD Ryzen 7 and an Intel i7. Details are below (and yes I did go with the glowing RAM because why not lol).
AMD:

Intel:

Thoughts are appreciated! I ordered the case today. And have the 3080 graphics card coming as a gift for Xmas, so that's not problem now.

Minor one, but at least with the AMD, if its comes with the CPU cooler, it already has the thermal grease applied to it, you may not need the one on your list.

much less critical for personal builds of course, but when i was servicing pc-based camera dvr's, i learned very quickly that 'included thermal grease' was a bad thing--most of them were cheap, and would dry out within 2-3 years, and then have overheating issues. i always would apply arctic silver to any heatsink because it didn't dry out.

Ok, here we go.
9 hours play time. Amazing city but, and this is going to read a little hypocritical given I've said a few times game play > than graphics, I am a little disappointed by the graphics. Just a little. I was expecting a little more visually high res. There is a metric ton of detail just not very well resolved. It's a tiny gripe. But the city is amazing so far and I've barely explored!

I've barely touched the main story so I haven't formed much of an impression of the major players so far. That is, there hasn't been time for relationships to form. I have just been picking little fights from the map to boost my stats. I will be doing this for a while. I have just recently discovered there are a lot of ways to infiltrate a enemy area.

My impressions so far:
Lots of exploring to do.
Heaps of stuff to do within a small area.
Take the following with the short play time I've had: So far it is a conventional rpg. Brilliantly done but nothing revelationary. Reminds me of Deus Ex quite a bit.

Talking of heaps to do. I've been playing for 9 hours and still haven't reached the title card being displayed. I read that it appeared at about 6 hours of game play so I'm definitely going to get my money's worth.

No bugs as yet.
Edit. I tell a lie. The key mapping is atrocious. I've already gone into a config file to get the mapping to a playable state though I'm still not happy. The "F" key seems to be hard bound which I really don't like given how much use it gets. I've read the Witcher was pretty bad on release too but it got sorted out via patches.

Well, when I built my system earlier this year with an AMD processor the thermal grease was more a "thermal patch" the size of the processor and probably an 1/8th of an inch thick. It would have been a serious pain to remove it and apply something different. So for, no issues with temps.

i7 8700, 1080ti, 16GB, @1440p
Ultra preset.

I can't tell you fps as I bought from GoG (not Steam) and I don't have Gefarce Experience installed. Fraps doesn't work.
I am happy with the frame rate. The game occasionally slows down but not often.

Began my first PC build officially. Ordered my desktop case and Ryzen 7 3700x processor! Excited to see how it all goes.

I was going to order the mobo too, but the stupid person in me kinda wants to hold off till I can get an X570i. But I'll probably just settle with the B550i and call it a day.

*edit*
I have basically completed what I'm going to do for my build. Below is the link to check it out. The graphics card will be the last thing as who knows when it will come in stock again. though it's very tempting just to buy an overpriced one from scalpers on ebay. I ordered the mobo, psu, chassis, and cpu. Found these neat little glowing fans for a decent price, and I'll just stick with the single fan that comes with the rig. Should be enough. Depending how the holidays go, I'll either order the rest of the stuff, or save up for a month and then finish it.

20 hours and I've seen the title card so the game has officially started.

Am I enjoying it? Yes, definitely but, there's sometimes not always a but, but it doesn't as yet give me the impression of being "next gen". I think it is an exceptional version of current gen. I don't even know what next gen is supposed to be except something from the marketing department.

Did I mention it reminds me of Deus Ex? Yes, yes I did. Not the first one (the best one) but DE:HR and DE:MD.

I think "next gen" means 80% marketing and 20% "outstrips current hardware at the extreme edges".

The city looks amazing. There are a couple of streets where I think I've seen that street in Hong Kong. The industrial area looks like an industrial area. I think there should be an in-game tour bus.

Sorry, I have to go. I feel a game is calling me back.

Gaming rant of the day.

I'm tired of open world games that use arena type battles for major battles of the game (looking at you AC: Odyssey). It's one thing to have a roman-type arena for historical accuracy and as a place to make some quick money/caps/feathers/other currency, and have it be optional.

It's another to have major "boss" battles where this supposed great warrior who understands the value of stealth, intelligent fighting from cover, the courage to run away when it aids the battle, yet when the warrior is hunting down a massive beast or mythical creature is willing to stand in the middle of an empty field with no cover and just shoot a million arrows at a foe until they are dead, even though 2 feet away there is cover, or cliff walls to fight from, etc.

After the first 20 seconds of the battle, there is no real strategy, just run, shoot, shoot, run, etc. There's no valuable challenge in it and frankly it's boring, and not just a little boring, it's boring to the point that I've just gone to changing the difficulty level from the hardest level to "easy" just for these parts of the game to get past it, not because I couldn't grind it out, but because I don't want to do that.

OK, I'm done now. Thanks for listening.....
