What to expect of the next gen twins?

Being realistic, what details can we expect?

I have a few ideas, but would like to see what others say first.

Twin turbo 2jz with 800 hp and probably 150 torque because toyota

OK then. I'll start...

Inline 4 cylinder Toyota engine. Possibly small displacement 1.5L thereabouts with a small turbo, perhaps one of the recently developed super efficient units, Toyota probably has 10 variants, thereabouts.

I wouldn't be surprised (depending on cost) if they used the Nissan developed pyrotechnic units for the hood in order to get away with a low profile hood and use an inline engine, just as the MX5 has. My guess is the boxer has been a bit of a pain for Toyota. Toyota service people were required to work on a boxer, which makes it the one deviation from the relatively easy to work on Toyota designed engines. However, if Subaru stays on board there has to be a boxer.

Weight will stay where it is or maybe they will shave off another 100 lbs to satisfy the fans. Aluminum as a metal is reasonably low these days so maybe some of the weight savings can be aluminum suspension components.


Upper spec package available in North America from Toyota.

Some familial resemblance to the next Supra, with much less steroids, as the Supra will probably start at 2.5 times the price.

Subaru made the camry for a few years, and to say it "has to be a boxer" is false.

I'd like to see minimal power gains and a descent bump in torque with very mild hybrid setup, a better gearbox, that's about it.

Having had the '17 86 for a week I'll go out on a limb and say the next generation will be a further refinement, moving it even further away from the original. I think it's a much nicer car, and having come from a '13 FR-S, I know it is. The immediate off-the-lot impression was it felt much more solid and quieter, which was proved to be true in a recent interview with Tada.

"Because racecar" buyers are not going to like it as much, so get down to the dealer and get the FR-S on sale.

The 86 has both, and not minimal, either, according to my butt dyno. Hoping to see actual numbers soon.

Well, what I'm looking for is that it will have a powerful 700 watt hub motor, 48 volt 20 AH batteries with smart charger, and key chain remote and anti-theft alarm, rear-view mirrors and turn signals for safety, front drum and rear expanding brakes, LED headlights, tail lights for nighttime driving, large rear storage basket, height adjustable flip-up armrests, dual shock absorbers, anti-tippers, and safety-belt.

Let's see if they can beat this one .. ??

Ummm, this is a thread for people to speculate, that's the point.

Subaru deviated from their marketing with a RWD. I highly doubt they'd drop the boxer, unless they really want to look like they are marketing Toyota's badge engineered product. Subaru is identified by consumers for these two things, AWD and boxer. That is unless both brands can use different engines (economically improbable).
