You'll be fine, even after you get I/H/E, and a tune.. which is a requirement as an 86 owner.
Do explain why it's a requirement. Especially when it's been proven that an intake and an exhaust do next to nothing except for make noise. Me thinks you shouldn't give advice if you've no clue what you're talking about.

@reeves ...... I agree with @Cole (this time ....).

Why do you think this car has a "requirement" for an aftermarket H/E/I and a tune.

Oh, maybe cause your car is running shine or oxy down in Georgia ??......

No self-respecting Southerner would waste good 'shine by pouring into a gas tank. The oxy, well....can't speak to that.

Yep, I keep my pure 'shine bottled up behind a locked cabinet in the cellar. Only that pre-mixed corn juice from the gas station goes in the car tank.

Sorry, there Dadhawk, I reckon I wasn't clear on what I meant. Not, "running on shine" but "running shine" as in:

(or was that some of that "dry humor" you picked up from ol @reeves ....??)

AGGH! Now I got it.

True story, my Dad actually did some "running shine". Should have picked up on the subtlety there. He also did some early dirt track stock car racing in his '57 BelAir with a 455Rocket in it and had raced against some of the early NASCAR stars. Unfortunately got into an accident on the track and my Mom forbid him to ever race again.

Personally, I blame her that I'm not now just retiring as the second generation driver and passing it along to my sons.

(Correction: I should have added the Belair was not his 'shine running rig or his earlier race car. That was later, early/mid '70's, and the one I got to drive. Not really sure what he used to run shine)

Seriously? If this is about Gas Mileage then maybe this isnt the car for you. This car is about drivability. Just look at the EPA estimates and that will give you a pretty good proximation if it's that important. I drive spirited rush hour traffic so I get around 19-20 MPG with about 50% rush hour freeway. If I go on a nice long Freeway drive, I get around 38. But it's never about MPG, but about the fun getting from point A to B. Fixating on MPG would ruin what this car is all about.

I spoke with my friend "Bubba" down at Bubba's Off Road store, and he suggests you get one of these and mount it in that worthless back seat area of an FR-S.

Yep, 40+12 gal = 52 gal = about 1,600 miles (or 25 days) between fill ups ....

Safety? Not to worry, it's in the back seat ...... where people put small children.

So, why is this so important to you ... ??
Like everything else, it's about money. I'm still in college but I'll be out soon and I don't know how quickly or reliably I'll be able to get a job, especially in the film industry (production side). I want to make sure I'm not shooting myself in the foot in the long run by making an emotional decision. A time may come where I can't afford the prem gas. I'm in new orleans btw lol

Driving the BRZ is always going to be more expensive than a car of comparable fuel economy that uses lower octane fuel as it requires higher octane fuel. I usually get low to mid 30s highway and about 26 ish driving in the city. The mazda is only a little better then it for how I drive it at about 28 city mid 30s highway. I'm sure some people might hit 40 mpg in the mazda but I haven't (but I'm not trying to either). However it is cheaper to drive the mazda because it uses lower octane fuel and it also has a larger tank allowing you to drive it further. So my typical range when the fill up light comes on with the BRZ is ~320 miles and with the mazda ~340. So not much difference.

For me I have the mazda for its practicality, cheaper operating cost, and being my daily driver. It definitely is the best handling car in its class and has pretty good performance. But the BRZ is very efficient as long as you don't mind paying for premium gas. It used to be my daily driver before I got the mazda. Either way you'll be making some savings over your escape.
YOU are the person I needed to hear from! I really appreciate the info. I'm gonna test drive both (even though it's apples and oranges in a way) but I may just get the frs.

Bottom line, my previous daily driver (A 2001 Chevy Astro) averaged 17.5MPG over 280,000 miles of mixed driving. The cost of "fuel savings" takes into account the difference between regular vs. premium based on the cost differential between premium and regular at each fill-up.

Right now I'm at the following, with a typical 80% Highway 20% local split:

Lifetime: 100,791.3 Miles Driven at 33.04 MPG
Savings over previous Daily Driver (2000 Chevy Astro): $6,714.10 and 2046.53 Gallons of Fuel

Car was purchased in 05/2012, I'm saving about $112 a month in fuel costs.

I do have an AT, which gets marginally better fuel economy because of better highway gearing at the top end.
thanks for the info. I'll check out your journal.

https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/bymo...d_Escape.shtml

Therefore I would expect OP to get straight city mileage in the FR-S, only ~21mpg.

Sorry if you bought the car already, you won't be saving much unless there is something wrong with the Escape causing poor fuel economy.

Range will likely be the same, I routinely fill up ~10 gallons with ~260 miles on the tripodometer when commuting.

To the guy who gets >17 mpg on track, you must drive slow as hell, I'm barely above 10 mpg.
the best i've ever gotten is 20 mpg and that was driving slower than I could stand and coasting down hills. 17 is what I usually get. I calculate it every time I fill up.
