Flooring it and running over redline or flooring it while it’s still in the “lugging” phase of the power band are ways to damage the engine. Running between those 2 points is fine

He's automatic, so the trans moves his input up in the rev range anyways

This is exactly how I see it. My old mechanic in Paradise, CA (RIP his shop) told me when his Subaru engines are warmed he likes to “really really give it the beans” to redline to “clear out” the engine.
