Oh I don't know the performance versions of some of those AMCs were pretty sweet as well.

Well that's a big step up from the Pacer, I'll give you that.

Be fair. You're trying to compare cars that were four years apart. Compare them year for year. This is the '70 Javelin, which competes pretty well against the '70 Challenger in the looks department.

Four years later cars had gotten uglier across the board. This is the '74 Challenger:

^It's certainly closer year to year but that great AMC paint job aside I would still favor the Challenger. The Javelin's more compact form is a big plus though. (My father had a nicely preserved 69 GTO convertible about the size of that Chally and that thing was a tank.)

What about the headlights? Are they going to be different too? Most of the renders have the same headlights. And why is Toyota taking so long to unveil their version of the car? That seems odd.

I don't think Toyota particularly cares about the gen II 86. They want us to buy a Supra instead - that's the performance halo for current Toyota sports cars.

They may have decided to let Subaru do their reveal first since allegedly Subaru did the bulk of the engineering work this time round. I suspect Toyota will do a similarly low-key reveal of their own early next year. Don't expect the kind of hype the Supra or even the GR Yaris had.

Actually, that might not be a bad thing - the less hype, the more likely early buyers are to be able to secure a good deal. When a car is hyped up too much, dealers sometimes try to charge top dollar and refuse to negotiate a discount. At least this way, a buyer can go in and point out they are doing the dealer a favour by taking an unloved and unpopular 86 off their hands.
