Hey guys, any chance you have some advice on how I should handle insurance claims right now for the damage to my car?

My own insurance knows I'm at-fault, but continues to lowball me on the repair. They insist on only repainting the bumper despite me asking for a new one, and they're completely ignoring the hood because it has no visible damage despite the video showing that it buckled during the impact. Their latest estimate for me is about 700 dollars plus my 500 dollar deductible.

The other party's insurance has accepted liability and their current estimate is about 1200 dollars and they currently aren't saying to replace the bumper or hood, only to remove the bumper and re-finish/re-paint it.

While the damage to the bumper isn't significant (no large dents or bends) there are enough small issues, including it being permanently pushed into the hoop/mis-aligned that I'd prefer to try getting a new bumper. The bumper had no damage before the accident and since I bought the car new I kind of don't want to be driving and knowing my bumper is a "repaired" bumper that may not have 100% structural integrity like it used to. I feel the same way about the hood.

@Clipdat looked over the damage and feels similarly.

But neither insurance is really going above and beyond, and I feel like most insurance would be doing the same thing. But I wish my own insurance were trying to help more since I've actually been paying my premiums on time and everything since I bought my car.

My insurance has been quite bad the whole time, even down to my agent trying to up-sell me mid-call on renters insurance to lower my premiums during the first conversation I had with him about all of this...

I'm leaning toward just having the other insurance deal with it but that kind of goes against what I originally learned, which is that my own insurance is supposed to "chase them down and get money to make the car how it was prior to the accident."

My parents have given some great advice, except that they are not car people so their opinions haven't been as useful. I mean, this isn't a Camry or other family car.
H
The good news is the other party's insurance has accepted that I will get an appraisal for diminished value so I should be able to get something that way too.

I'm confused. Who is at fault?

You could take the check from the other parties insurance, then fix the way you want. You might have to pitch in some if you want a new bumper. If the adjusters say the bumper can be fixed, it is probably the best you will get.

I would just take it to the shop and have them fix it. If it looks crappy, then you can jump up and down.

Unfortunately they are under no obligation to replace repairable parts because you think they should.

Go through your own insurance. Choose any shop you want. Have them give an estimate. Then once they get approval, have them do the work. The other insurance company will then pay. Going through the other person's insurance company is how you get f-d in the a.

My suggestion, have a reputable shop take a look at it and see what they think. Ask them what it takes to fix it right. Do what you have to do to get them in touch with the insurance company and let them fight over it.

What Simon said is what I ment by just go get it fixed. Go thru proper channels, if it needs a new bumper, the shop will deal with the insurance. If they say they can fix the one on it, have faith. Whoever you pick, I'm sure it won't be their first rodeo.

Also your opinions on what the right way to fix it is doesn't matter. A shop's opinion totally matters.

i know how down you were about not being able to send me your old garage speakers, so i wanted to let you know some really nice people left some large-and-in-charge KLH speakers in the trash for me today. so my monthly speaker quota is maintained!

nah, there wasn't any questionable content in my post, so there was no reason to delete it. more likely an issue with the creature behind the keyboard spamming the new thread button...

New schedule for the humfrz day care. Our daughter changed companies so now she will be dropping off the granddaughters at 0615. UGH!

Hey, nothing like starting the day off at 0615 with two hungry, grumpy, pre-teenagers and a still half asleep 3 year old.

Yes, but, we them.

I went to Walmart today and got the 3 year old a small, blow up pool to hold her off till I get the big one put up. The air valves weren't made right, so it wouldn't accept air. So, I took it back to the store for exchange and opened up another one while in the store, it was fucked up as well. The store clerk agreed that they were not made properly. So, old pa-pa returned without a pool, to face my 3 year old granddaughter, who had her swimming suit on and all her water toys ready to go -

Walmart, made in China, $19.95 - what should have I expected -

This grandpa-ing is getting to be a lot like work -
