I think its because car engines sound so quiet, flat and boring these days due to economy, emissions and sound regulations, even on sportscars.

Back when you could have a high revving, naturally aspirated engine sending its exhaust through a nearly straight piped exhaust, car engines, even economy ones, often sounded great. A nice, linear, rising crescendo of mechanical fury, winding itself out in song. Just listen to sportscars and racecars of the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s - even the 4 cylinder ones could sound fantastic, better than most 6 or 8 cylinder cars today.

To make up for the quieter, heavily muffled, emissions choked exhaust sounds of today, people decided burbles, farts, and pops and bangs made up for it, hence these trends. It’s a result of trying to make the engine sound interesting and ‘sporty’ given they can no longer have a simple, loud, sonorous high revving exhaust note anymore. That’s my theory.

My theory is that people are dumb AF.

Crappy sounding flowmasters, fart cans, and obnoxious glass packs that were purposely blown out goes WAYYY back. The modern trend of burble pop is just a different take on giving the rest of the world an obvious signal that you are a semi-functional moron.

I resent/resemble that remark!

Well, first you light a stick on fire, then you put a shotgun shell in it and bang it.

Now if only you could combine that with my parents old red tractor which had a (single) steering stick that you pushed forward/back to turn; and no it was never a skid steer.

Been kinda trying to figure out what it was. It may have been a Gibson Stick Steer

Oh! We had one of those! Tiller steering and four V-belts as a clutch.
Model A transmission.

Ours had a lightweight pulley on the front of the engine.
Had to wind a pull rope around it to make it go.

It did tend to burble a bit though.
