I don't think you're grasping what I am trying to say. Quantity vs. Quality isn't an arguement. You clearly choose Quantity. You're COMPARING in n out's price to 5 guys price. Some people will like in n out more because of the price. Some people will justify the price of five guys because they think it tastes better. Some people will buy in n out becuase they prefer the taste. There's a bunch of different variables because of opinion.

This applies more than just burgers.. And funny thing is, my econ teacher used the same analogy. Five guys vs in n out.

In the case of In-N-Out though quantity and quality are not mutually exclusive. That's why there's generally a 30 minute line at every location. I don't go there often, but I understand why people do.

It just keeps getting better! A few words replaced here and there and we have every thread in the verses section.

Having lived on both coasts, if I'm in Cali I will go to In-N-Out for a burger because its fresh and tastes great. But out here on the East Coast Five-Guys is a solid substitute... Fries 5-guys wins every time

That's enough reason for me NOT to eat there. I rarely wait 30 minutes at any restaurant, and NEVER at fast food. There is no place that serves food good enough I'm willing to wait to be seated or get to the counter more than about 10 minutes.

It drives my father-in-law nuts because he loves places that always have long waits (must be good, people are always waiting). I won't accept a dinner invite unless he acknowledges that if there is a line, we will be going somewhere else. It particularly galls me when you have a reservation and they still tell you "Sir, you shall have to wait". Sorry, ugm no.

My own particular hang-up I realize.

I have exactly the same hang up. There is not a hope in hell I am waiting more then a few minutes for the privilege of eating someplace I don't care how good it is. It really galls me when they don't take reservations but do seat you and you see empty tables all over but they still make you wait.

^^ Habit is pretty good too. It's cheaper than five guys and a little more expensive than in-n-out. Happy medium!

We have both here in Austin. I found the In-n-Out burger to be as generic a hamburger as I have ever had. If you looked up "hamburger" in the dictionary, there ought to be an In-N-Out burger photo with the definition.

I like Five Guys burgers better. They have some character to them. However, by far the best locally is a place called Hat Creek. I don't think they're outside the Austin area yet. Also, watch out for a place called "P. Terry's". The way they're growing I expect that they will be found everywhere one of these day.

All told, there are in excess of 150,000 college and university students in the Austin region (if you throw in San Marcos and Georgetown). That makes for a lot of potential to sell hamburgers.

At least in Austin, the line is not at the counter, it's at the Drive Through. Never had to wait long at the counter, but car conga line goes around the block.
