P0016/P0017 cause

If you have a mechanical issue that is causing your car to stall out when coming to a stop [error codes P0016, P0017], it is likely because of your cam sprocket. This photo illustrates the issue - the little piece on the inside left that looks like it has a spring behind it is the cause. It is actually supposed to sit flush with the back, but it will pop out and cause a oil pressure loss, which causes the cam to not respond fully. If this has happened, the cam sprocket will need to be replaced unless you can get that piece to sit flush again.

Here is two more shots:

This is how the back of the cam sprocket should look - the piece is fit flush with the inner surface.

The entire sprocket/cam assembly.

@AVOturboworld I am currently having a P0016 code that won't go away. Came back after I reflashed my ECU with my tune.

How hard of a job is this to inspect? Any links to diagrams to DIYs?

Also, I have an oil pressure gauge. Would you notice a dangerous or drastic drop in oil pressure when this happens?

Toyota has had my car twice. It is highly modified but they told me if this is something not caused by my mods they will cover it.

you can see it when logging with ecutek - the cams don't respond as fast as the other side. The graphs when revving up won't be similar to each other.

Awesome! This is great! I'll give this a shot tomorrow! Would you say it's dangerous to track the car with this issue?

P0017... No idling issues. Can be cleared while the car is on and doesn't come back up till you turn the car off and back on.
Any ideas?

Is this cam sprocket the only cause of the p0017 issue? I don't really want to spend $200 on a part and a day of labor to find out it's something else. Haha

I just got the p0017 code this morning, could this be just the sensor? This came after having the p000b(exhaust cam position response slow) for a while. I cleared the code before I drove to work but it still was there according to my reader. I then just checked it at lunch right now and it didn't show at all. The part numbers for both are SU00300413 AND 414. Which one is for bank 1?

Sorry to break the news, but typically this is the cam sprocket problem. Can you describe your issue a bit more? How does it idle?

Is there a guide on how to do this repair? Could someone detail at least how to access this to inspect?

This involves engine removal and valve train disassembly.

The rule here is "If I have to ask how, then I'm not qualified."
