I agree on transmission oil flush. Check for metal in fluid.

If you really don't wanna do anything, then dealer warranty. Go go.

Changing the fluid will not fix broken parts. Doesn't matter what variety of snake oil you put in there.

People say it all the time in Manual transmission threads, because they don't understand how manual transmissions work. Most people do not give sound advice about manual transmissions because they lack technical understanding.

This is roughly equivalent to telling you to "change the engine oil and see how it runs" if you had dropped a valve. ... F*ck.

You broke the baulk ring mechanism. That was the pop. That's why it's "crunchy" on the way in to gear.

It's fine, everybody makes mistakes. Replacements are cheap.

If this transmission grinds on the way into gear, in any gear, during a normal shift, something is broken. That's what the baulk ring mechanism in this transmission does. It prevents gear engagement until the synchro sleeve and gear are moving the same speed, and partially locked together. It can't grind. If it does, metal parts are broken.*

All of the gears (There are more than 6) are in constant mesh, they don't slide in and out. The only things that slide in this transmission are the engagement sleeves, over the engagement teeth. No teeth are "chipped." The engagement teeth can be chipped, but that's impossible unless you first break the baulk ring mechanism, and then continue to shift until one chips. Either way, "chipped teeth" don't cause grinding on shifts. If the baulk ring mechanism is functioning, everything is already locked at the same speed before anything ever slides over anything else.

*If it is first engaged, and then carefully half-disengaged with the clutch draging, you can make a correctly functioning transmission in this car grind, but that's for argument's sake, and can't happen on a normal shift. There are 2 distinct steps for every gear engagement. You should be able to feel them.

Ever wonder why there are so few manual transmissions left here in North America? Ever wonder why you can't rent one here from any major company anymore? What happens to something when it can't be idiot-proofed? When it can't be ludicrously padded and softened for idiots?

Yours is broken too. It's internal to the 3-4 shift sleeve.

With the baulk ring mechanism broken, the car will shift into that gear fine most of the time, but you'll wear the engagement sleeve, the engagement teeth, and the synchro rings out at an accelerated rate. The grinding will get worse until the gear becomes virtually unusable. It's a god damn Toyota though, that wear could take 100,000 miles to happen..

I don't think they are saying to change the fluid to fix it but to see if there's metal in it and to remove anything to do further damage.

You're right, the tranny itself is a big mystery to most humans. It's an oddly shaped box of magic and the stick is the wand.

I have never owned an automatic vehicle, and I've gone through maybe 7 or so

Plenty of car enthusiasts can drive or have a willingness to learn manual, but there are a lot more people who view their car as a tool and the easiest it gets the job done, the better. Can't fault that.

Life is too short to worry about little things like this for me. Thankfully used transmissions for this car are cheap! Either way, I'll monitor it and act appropriately.

I've had light crunches come and go with this transmission, especially early on. Honestly I wouldn't worry until it makes really bad noises. There are no shortage of "wrecked while drifting" twins in junkyards with perfectly good transmissions you can use when yours fails after 100k or whatever.

Change your fluid in case you got metal bits floating around and move on.
