Intermittent no-crank/no-start 2013 BRZ Limited

Hello FT86Club,

I have owned my '13 BRZ Limited since new, it has roughly 50k, a brand new battery, and is otherwise stock. I am experiencing an intermittent no start issue. It happens about once every two weeks or about 5% of the time starting the car. Clutch in and push the start button, the car will not crank or go beyond accessory mode. I can do this multiple times and nothing happens. I wait 5-10 minutes or so, try again, it starts right up. 95% of the time the car starts right up with no issue, it's just these odd times when the no-crank/no-start happens.

About 2 months ago I, stupidly, used a 300W Car Power Inverter DC 12V to 110V AC. I tried to power a vacuum cleaner with it, which, obviously did not work and immediately blew the fuses for the outlet in the glovebox and again for the outlet in the center console. I replaced both 15A fuses, #2 and #22. I do not know if this is somehow related but the starting issue began happening shortly after, so I am assuming I may have fried something else as well.

What should I do next?

Check the clutch safety switch. Make sure you push the clutch ALL the way to the floor board.

Thank you both! That sounds exactly like my issue. From what I gather, I will need to replace the top switch (closest to the steering wheel) as the lower switch (closer to the floorboard) is for the cruise control? Anyone have a part number on hand?

I had this issue too! It wasn't the clutch switch. It was the steering wheel lock mechanism. If the steering wheel is cocked to one side it rests on the lock mechanism hard enough that it can't disengage. You can feel the tension when the wheel is resting on them. Simply turn the wheel in direction that unseats it and it will start every time.

Just a follow up for those with the same problem. It was indeed the clutch safety switch. Thanks to all who commented on my post. I used the below video as a guide. I replaced the UPPER switch (closest to steering column) part #83281AA010. I replaced it a month ago and have not had any more incidents.
