Thanks for the replies! Yea the 10 round limit is a consideration, might as well have 10 more powerful rounds.

@TylerLieberman you said get a light? Is that something everyone does? I was thinking a 1x scope (etched reticle for faster target acquisition, I can't use a holographic sight since my astigmatism is kind of bad), but wasn't really sure about the light. I won't be living anywhere pitch dark anytime soon.

I was in NYC until a few months ago, and plan on going back next year when things open up again. There's a lot of things I don't like about it, but it's the best place for a younger guy like me to meet people and such. Job market there isn't looking so good right now but I expect it'll pick up at least a little next year.

Yes, put a light on whatever you buy. It's dark half the time and shitbags seem to prefer doing shitbag things when it's dark (but not always).

Statistically, most bad people are doing bad things at night. You can't shoot what you can't identify. I posted a video talking about this a page or two ago on this thread; check it out. Streamlight at a minimum for lights. Those work well without breaking the bank. Surefire, Arisaka, Modlight if you want something bomb proof and are able/willing to spend the money. Just stay away from stuff like OLight and all those other $40 ebay/amazon lights.

A light is a must on ANY defense weapon, in my opinion. Not even just at night, but low light in general. It could be day time, but if power is out, there's plenty of places in some buildings where you won't be able to see anything.

As far as optics go, I have a friend who also has astigmatism. I told him to check out the Holosun HS510C, which (for some reason) seems to be a great option for many people with astigmatism. He's very happy. Holosun has gotten to be pretty decent in recent years with their QC and overall value, given their price points.

Aimpoint T2/Comp M4/5, and the EOTech EXPS 2/3 are typically my go to choices for optics. I can use those pretty comfortably out to like 150-200m. If I need to stretch out further, I can pop on a 3x magnifier.

If you're gonna get an actual scope, I'd opt for an LPVO (low power variable optic) that allows you range between like 1x and then up to something like a 4x or 8x or something. Could also run a red dot offset for faster target aquisition at close range, which is a popular setup people run now adays.

It's just like cars though. You need to identify you actual situation/environment and figure out what you really need and what makes sense for your intended application/uses.

OK, light it is.

I was looking at LPVOs but then I thought wait, is magnification useful at all for self-defense? As far as I can tell, the "1x" on most variable scopes is either something like 1.3 or has a distorted fisheye effect. A 1x fixed scope should behave more like a red dot, having a nice big "eye box" and low distortion.

I recall as a kid shooting a 22LR rifle with a scope on it at a range, and it actually wasn't easy at all to hit the bullseye at just 25m. The magnification just made it more obvious that my hands weren't steady lol.

Maybe you should reconsider a shotgun -

Etched reticle makes it less likely to be affected by astigmatism. Might be worth looking into.

A scope has a limited eye relief and is typically not as quick a simple red dot/holo sight. If I was gonna use a scope, I'd at least want something that gives me some extra benefit over a standard 1x sight. Having the ability to switch between a 1x and something higher is nice when using such an optic.

I still prefer the speed from a red dot, so I'll almost always choose a red dot + magnifier over an LPVO. I can use the red dot as normal and the flip the magnifier into the optic line when needed. Then flip out of the way again for CQs again.

If you could, see if you can take a look at a few different optics in person. A lot of the major retail stores will have some out on display and there shouldn't be much issue in taking one out for you to see.

It actually never occurred to me to go look at them in person LOL. I tend to think about stuff theoretically at home. If a 1x prism is truly non-magnified, it should behave exactly like a red dot with an equal size window, since the light rays should have unaltered direction, and your eye has to be directly behind the lens to see the reticle in both cases. I wouldn't be surprised if in practice, the image deteriorates as you move your head away from a scope.

The obvious theoretical advantage I can think of for red dots is that you can find bigger ones (giving a bigger eye box) easily, while I can't find a 1x scope bigger than 30mm diameter.

I know this is just a fun showcase thread, but has anyone considered that they are giving firearm advice to somebody with the username "serialki11r"...?

I'm very good at hitting running people in the head at long distances with sniper rifles in Battlefield BC2 and have gotten reasonably good at CS1.6 lately! It's a very accurate username, people fear me in fps games.

I guess when you hang out on a forum with a talking potato and the Canadian Ned Flanders stuff like that seems irrelevant.

All you know is that I can enter ASCII characters on a webpage. Talking is another matter entirely.
