I contribute to this rescue. In the before times, we had lots of activity in the bay. Even a part in the 4th of July parade in Novato. https://www.ggbassetrescue.org/ I also make contributions to here http://www.daphneyland.com/ |

As said a few times by others, adoptions can be tricky and not only from a behavioral view but health issues too. That's a plus, but no guarantee, of getting a purebred puppy from a reputable breeder who did all the joint, eye, etc. exams, provides a guarantee and return privilege if your vet disagrees with their representations, and an AKC pedigree to trace bloodlines if needed.
Even then rare conditions can develop. My dog developed canine discoid lupus later in life, an extremely rare condition affecting a handful of Northern European Spitz and Herding breeds and came from one of the most highly regarded breeders in North America. Most Humane Society shelters have purebred puppies about monthly, often from puppy mills. They go fast so keep checking their site. One of the biggest Oregon puppy mill busts happened at the HS where I volunteer. They have three full time sworn officers who went out to investigate a mill in Eastern Oregon that resulted in a roundup of 400 Dachshunds. Most had never seen a human and ran wild in the farmer's field. It looked like the wild buffalo scene from Dances With Wolves. We went through a specific process to domesticate them then shipped some out to other shelters and re-homed the rest. The became cute, lovable critters but don't know about any health issues from inbreeding. |

My parents current dog is one they pretty much took from a family that wasn’t taking care of her. She is weird, she won’t let you pick her up or scratch her butt. She goes into a panic.
The one before was a stray that would follow our lab around while we were camping. The state parks ranger shot her and the camp host was able to catch her and take her to the vet. We think she was 2 and was likely lost, she was house trained. Was one of our best dogs, lived to be about 17. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Probably not her fault. Who knows what she was exposed to. Sound like she has a good home now.
