Also, you need an extra set of wheels which do make it more expensive to run dedicated tires (or the cost of swapping tires twice a year, which probably evens out with the wheels over time).
Good points,

but if you don't mind the looks, you can get some cheap used wheels for almost nothing.

They may not be as nice as summer tires but they are better than half the year on winters.
EVERYTHING about tires is a compromise anyway. No matter what you are after you are going to give something else up to get it.
Come on, get three sets of wheels and tires and do summers for 3-4 months. With all the tire/wheel changes you will be ready for NASCAR pit stops.

Wheels are dirt cheap.

I don't change nor store my winter/summer tires. I pay a place $50 a year to store and swap them. I make an appointment, laugh at them try to put my car up on the truck hoist (it won't fit but they try every single year), tell them to move it to Bay 1, have a smoke and coffee and 15 to 20 minutes later drive away with the proper tires for the season on the car.

Depends on where you live. All seasons in Georgia are pretty much 11 month tires, with a few scattered days you are better driving something else.

I'm quite happy with the all-seasons on mine, even when the temp is hovering around freezing or below, and it's dry. Once it's not dry I swap to a different car.

Yes this is true but really places like Georgia, the other southern states and the PNW are only 3 season locations at worst. Some are damn near just summer and fall like with spring being an extension of summer and winter all but nonexistent.
