Cusco 4.556 final drive questions
Hi everyone,
I'm planning to have my FD installed next week and had a couple of questions. I've searched the forums and have only found reviews on the subject. Do I or the shop that I'm having it installed at need to purchase shims, a pinion shaft, differential bushing (suggested since I'm doing the FD) "It supposed to help with getting the car off the line". Also, do I need to change the differential oil to Tomei differential oil? Is this all necessary? Is there anything else I need to know about before having it installed? My car has 14k on it at the moment. Cusco USA says everything I need is in the kit, so I'm a bit confused. |

I don't know what CUSCO puts into their kit. Open the box and see whats in there. The pinion shaft is more than likely part of the kit. Shims probably are as well. Bring the box of parts to the shop and have them look if you do not want to do it.
Look up the Whiteline diff bushing stuff (they have two types). You do not need to replace, it is an option based on preference. |

1.41201D Pinion shim set all size , it take only one but need all of it to adjust clearance , better to have these ready if you don't want any delay .
2.41231 Pinion spacer/distance collar , in my case this parts was not useable and mine was replace/upgrade to cusco distance collar but need Nissan Shim set to adjust pinion clearance , the 41201D shim set no longer suitable . 3.41334B x 2 differential size seal Other stuff , the workshop have it for me . |

Did you already purchase the Cusco kit? My understanding is that it uses an OEM Toyota ring and pinion and is therefore quiet and reliable. If you want to save some money Weir Performance offers an excellent 4.56:1 kit for quite a bit less money, which is what I chose to do.
Unless you're replacing your LSD at the same time you can continue to run OEM specification 75w90 gear oil, so there's no need to run special Tomei fluid. Last edited by RJasonKlein; 04-05-2017 at 10:14 PM. Reason: Corrected a typographical error. |

Thank you all for chiming in and helping a new guy out. I opened the box today at the shop and there is a ring, pinion and a bag of misc that I'm not familiar with. I got really confused because I was talking with the sales guy at the shop initially and not the tech. Now that I've spoken to the tech, I understand the part instal a little more clearly. The only sad part is I will have to be without my car for about a week. They will order new shims from Toyota and that is included in the 8hr instal rate. I will also be adding the Whiteline rear diff mount and transmission mount bushing insert, along with the Mtec shift springs as well. Figured I might as well save some money on shop time, cause we all know, that ain't cheap.
P.S. How do I give these guys a forum thanks? The ones the forums keeps track of. |

Here is what I ordered for my install...
90311-38070 pinion seal $8.71 - the one included in the Toyota kit will not fit our housing... 90366-35133 pinion bearing $87.06 - not strictly necessary, but can can be damaged during removal from your old pinion shaft... 12157-10010 drain bolt gasket $1.08 SU003-00122 fill bolt gasket $1.79 90311-43009 quantity 2 differential axle seal($15.60 each) Most differential shops stock the shims and oil - I was not picky on the oil since I changed it out after 500 mile break in. |

I remember reading that it was nothing more than a glorified, marked up Toyota product, rebranded Cusco and then "Cusco taxed" on top of that. However, I also have aluminum bits in my car with "blue powder coat tax" on them as well. What I'm getting at, is that I'm a sucker.
