the smart key was the only added feature making me consider the brz/ltd, but now that i've come across this, i have no complaints...

Looks like a pretty clean add-on, but I gotta ask, what's the attraction that makes this worth $350 - $400 for an owner? I guess since I've never had a car with it (well unless you include a 1964 Dodge I owned in the late 70's that you started by touching the ignition wires together) I just can't see where it adds much.

Not trying to be critical, heck I say do what you want, but I'm just curious and looking for some feedback on it. Convince me I need it!

you're old school, you probably don't need it

i have some personal reasons why i want this, but i will keep that out of it...

i have never owned a car with them either, heck, the fr-s will only be my third car...

some generic reasons why people may want to get this:
-it is very convenient; you do not have to touch the key to perform any and all tasks related to ignition and lock/unlocking your car, as long as you have the key in your position... very handy on those rainy days when you want to hop in your car asap or when your hands are full from shopping...
-impossible to get locked out of your car, EVER, even on purpose...
-the added features people may take advantage of depending on the application include remote engine start/stop, open/close windows, trunk release, etc...

All good reasons. Every time I think about this though I have flashes of the episode of Top Gear UK where the gents were in the US at a diner and Jeremy snuck out and moved the others car out into the middle of the street. It had push button start and was directly outside the window from where they're were sitting. Probably staged but makes you think.

hmmm, yes, it's all very technical...

but as far as this kit is concerned, the proximity sensors range is roughly 5' depending on where the sensor is mounted, but i don't really see that as an issue for me...

No I don't think its a real world issue either. Out of curiosity though does the car shut off when it gets out of RFID range?

not sure... and i don't think anyone is brave enough to try it, haha...

i know for some factory units you can keep driving for miles without it, i've done it... it was an infiniti

Probably 99% stock. I'll most likely change the tires before winter, add aftermarket navigation and am seriously considering blacking out the badges. If I make performance mods it would be after the warranty period, which for me would be about 2.5 years.

Nope, it doesn't; it would just complain the key is out of range. At least that's how the factory system (Toyota's) behaves. If this after market system is different, I wouldn't want it on my car.

My car has Smart Entry&Start, and it's very convenient.

The trouble with these systems is that most of them will let you drive off without the key. Say the key is on a bench in the garage near the car. You start the car and drive away. When you get to you destination you turn off the car. Now you're stuck. An OEM system might have an idiot light to warn you that the key is out of range, so you have a hope of noticing and heading back, but an aftermarket one is probably not integrated quite as nicely.

In an OEM system, the car won't start unless the key is in the car. Having it on the ground beside the car, or on a bench won't work. The proximity sensors are very sensitive and specific about where the key is.

Really the only time this can be an issue is if the car is already running, and then you take the key out of it. Like dropping someone off somewhere and they had the key, or you get out and someone else takes the car somewhere, etc. Still in most OEM systems, it beeps and displays a warning if the key leaves the inside of the car.
