So you are saying it should be a higher priority to pack as many cars into the smallest space possible than it is to get cars through the restriction as quickly as possible?

No, I'm saying you cannot change how many cars get packed through the smallest space possible. However, you can use as much space as possible before that point.

The late merge works only when both lanes cooperate.
The driving lane just needs to keep space for ONE car in front of each of them.
The merging lane just needs to have ONE car at a time at the end of the lane.
The issue arises when the driving lane won't let people in OR the merging lane gets several cars all up at the front with no space between them to allow the driving lane to let one in at a time.
Both are the result of drivers that feel they are entitled to be in front of the rest.

Other than around the big cities where traffic volume simply overwhelms the system (due to entitled drivers) there are generally very few problems with zipper merging around here. In fact I recall that @Ultramaroon even mentioned how good the drivers here were at it.

Maybe it would help if the zipper merge was designed like an actual zipper where the two lanes merge into one lane that is centered between them, so neither the driving lane nor the merging lane. This would not work in every situation, but seems like it would work in some, including a sign that says USE BOTH LANES AND BE NICE TO EACH OTHER AHEAD, YOU MORONS!

PNW drivers are a pretty low bar. I am pretty sure you could funnel donkeys from two chutes to 1 more effectively then people can merge here.

This morning when I was getting on the freeway I was in the left lane on the onramp and another car was on the right staggered with me as we negotiated it like semi reasonable humans. Another car came up and pulled onto the shoulder and cut across over to the freeway spraying gravel everywhere.

That is only valid if your goal is to get TO the point quicker, but in a perfect world has little effect how many vehicles can get THROUGH the point in slowed/stopped traffic. In the real, imperfect world it's actually to the detriment of flow as a whole.

My garage is more like

"now where did I put the tape measure?"

"IT WAS RIGHT THERE!"

"OWWWW"

"OF COURSE I HAVE TO REMOVE THAT"

I haven't read much of the past two pages, but I do regret bringing up zipper merges.
