Awesome log! Just read all 9 pages. I hope you can still find time to tinker on it; I appreciate all your advices around here.

Just dropping in to let everyone know I didn't die!
I got the heads all together, bolted on, valve covers on.

I took the cam gears apart to clean everything and am happy I did- one of them had the floppy door that leads to replacement of the gear anyway! So, purchased a new gear and things are good.
The reason that the floppy door is bad, is that it has a spring behind it that, in tandom with the door, controls oil pressure for cam timing. If the door is FLOPPY, it doesn't hold the correct oil pressure!!! I don't have a good photo of it, sorry. I have included a bunch of photos of the cam gear innards, in case you were curious how complex these things are.

I have also included a photo of the oil filter screens you need to replace.

I ended up getting an AEM 340lph pump and putting it in.
Had to purchase all new rockers, shims, caps, valve stems, tons of misc bolts. Toyota threw away almost all of that stuff, and my old engine is still in the car.

Put all new rotors and pads on the car, as well as making a custom gauge pod in the instrument cluster bezel. I just cut a hole in it and behind it, fits perfectly.

Photos are in no order- car now sits at VEMS awaiting the old engine to be fully removed and then we'll begin final assembly!

Life has been crazy. My boss got fired for his grievances with me and life has been getting a lot better for me since his departure. Now that I'm not spending my days escaping via this forum, I'm just visiting much less still dedicated and excited! Just spending my time on the computer far more sparingly.

Also, VEMS started tearing into my old engine to see what happened. 4 broken rockers, and the crank nose sprocket is damaged, wtf. No idea how the crank sprocket got taken for a ride, but VEMS said the timing cover did not have OEM sealant, so someone had been in there before...

There was another thread where one had broken from them trying to start the car with a breaker bar still on the crank bolt. In your case, I would say something may have gotten between the chain and sprocket, possibly piece of rocker arm.

Just read this whole thread. Can't wait to see what you put down. It's refreshing to see something different.

Quick update-
Engine is in time, front cover and upper oil pan on. Worried about how hard the direct injectors went in, I'm hoping I didn't shred the seals. I left the injectors in the freezer, gave them each a small layer of dielectric grease, and they still pressed in pretty hard. They eventually slid in on their own, I'm certain there's nothing I could've done differently. If I have fueling issues, I'll know where to go first

Waiting on the rubber washer gaskets for the lower oil pan, forgot to order them. Goal is to have the engine back in the car over the weekend, and then I can start adding all the goodies back to it. We'll see!

On a side note, I had the opportunity to purchase my dream winter beater.
Japanrot red E46 325xi. The guy knew me and let me take the car home to look over it. But, the floor had rusted out where the jack points go, and all 4 corners were trash. I shined up his headlights as a thank you for letting me take it home to check it out.
So hard to bring it back, but I know better.

I was on the fence about getting the red intake manifold for the bling, but I'm glad I stayed with the black one. Still missing a couple little things but it's there! It hasn't hit me yet that my car may actually run soon.
Bring on the oil leaks and poorly seated injectors, I'm ready to fight
