Previously Unknown Loss of Antarctic Ice Discovered by NASA – “Antarctica Is Crumbling at Its Edges”

Quote:
One study, published recently in the journal Nature, maps how iceberg calving – the breaking off of ice from a glacier front – has changed the Antarctic coastline over the last 25 years. The scientists found that the edge of the ice sheet has been shedding icebergs faster than the ice can be replaced. This surprising finding doubles previous estimates of ice loss from the Antarctic’s floating ice shelves since 1997, from 6 trillion to 12 trillion metric tons.

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/antarct...y-fingernails/

Antarctica's "doomsday glacier" could raise global sea levels by 10 feet. Scientists say it's "holding on today by its fingernails."

Quote:
Over the course of 5.5 months at some point in the last 200 years, scientists found that the glacier retreated at a rate of more than 2.1 kilometers (1.3 miles) a year — twice the distance it retreated from 1996 to 2009 and three times the rate from 2011 to 2017.

while i don't disagree that it's a good thing, as the coal rolling stuff was getting out of hand, siccing the full weight of the EPA on them, well, it's like hiroshima'ing the neighborhood bullies block because he took your lunch money and kicked your sister for the past 3 months.

when the FAA took over drone management with the registration of anything that flies, and now the remote id broadcast requirements, it's all but entirely killed off aerial r/c as a hobby.

the local forest preserve has a dedicated flying field. used to be every weekend there was barely enough parking spaces for all the people there, half of which were just there to chew the fat with other similarly-minded individuals.

now that field, if there's 1 car there, it's a busy day.

this is going to be similar. the war path the EPA is on doesn't bode well for any company that's ever sold anything that mods the emissions systems of any vehicle. and how many peoples first mod was a UEL catless header?

They probably would've gotten a different ruling had they not ignored the EPA's requests and then tried to liquidate their inventory in spite of the investigation.

Quote:
Both companies are owned by one Nicholas Piccolo, who also faces a $455,925 civil penalty for his failure to respond to the EPA’s initial information requests related to the businesses.
Quote:
In fact, court documents uploaded by the EPA even claim that Diesel Ops specifically engaged in an online “fire sale” after receiving the request from the EPA in order to liquidate their stock.
Quote:
An additional judgment of just under $1 million was also entered against the shop owner relating to the Federal Debt Collection Procedures Act and alleged fraudulent transfers. Piccolo and his associates allegedly began to move assets out of the businesses once the EPA began to insist on compliance, while continuing to ignore the EPA’s information requests.

Sorry, didn't intend to relate to the current fine. Was intending my post to the overarching EPA crackdowns on all diesel emissions.

They absolutely made it worse by doing the fire sale and ignoring the EPA. But the EPA didn't have much for teeth for quite some time as well if I'm not mistaken. Or maybe that was the NHTSA...

"Assigning deaths can also be tricky. Heat-associated deaths are generally not well documented; heat often contributes to death without being the direct cause and heat may not be considered as a potential cause of death. With respect to coronial records, it is not generally possible to identify heat-related deaths through autopsy alone: the circumstances around the death must also be understood. Thus, many deaths that are in fact heat-related will not necessarily be recorded as such."

It Wasn’t Just Oil Companies Spreading Climate Denial
The electricity industry knew about the dangers of climate change 40 years ago. It denied them anyway.

people have gotten away with modding their ecus for decades now, of course this is bound to happen as companies flagrantly operate outside the law. fuck around and find out.

You ever speed, even by 1mph? People have been getting away with it for decades. But these car companies continue to make cars that can well exceed the speed limit. You would clearly recommend sending the NHTSA after them then?

Well yeah, worth mentioning I suppose, yet if all utility providers were there then the nuclear, wind, solar, hydro, geothermal, tidal and whoever else is renewables would have just looked across the room at coal and natural gas with scornful faces, and said, "don't lump us in with them."

I think there is a big distinction between the two. A car can be exceeding the speed limit going 6mph in a 5mph zone. How slow would you require manufactures make cars? They could eventually create autonomous systems to prevent speeding when the technology catches up to all vehicles, but what you are describing isn't the same as creating a ECU tool to avoid detection during emissions testing. If manufactures produced a car that jammed radar detectors or had automatic strobe lights to block traffic cameras at intersections or went into stealth mode when a helicopter radar was on them then that would be different.

I think what you were thinking is that manufactures could, and thus should, prevent exceeding the highest top speed of a public road like 85mph. They could do this in the future, as mentioned, and only unlock the car if it is on a private road or track, but this isn't currently realistic. Were you against VW getting fined for their role in emissions cheat devices? If not then why defend these guys? Do you think the EPA should be softer on these guys? Whether we are talking about speeding or modifying a car illegally, it is a crime and part of the risk, so no one, including me, has a right to complain when it is their or my turn getting caught.

https://ww2.arb.ca.gov/our-work/topi...iesel-vehicles

Quote:
The defeat device consisted of software designed to cheat during state and federal emission tests. The result was these vehicles produced oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emissions that were up to 40 times higher than allowed.
