GoPro 10 settings

Given that GoPros are popular for autocross/track video, I went out and bought a new 10 on sale, as the 10 was only about $50 more than an 8 with the discount. I have a headrest mount, and put it on there for an event.

Let's just say the video is terrible, the outside is wildly overexposed. I looked up some fixes for that and tried again, but it really hasn't made things much better. Now, I know other folks have made this work well, could you share your settings? Older ones may offer some clues too, so please post what you have that you're happy with. Thanks.

Could you post some sample video? I'm curious to see what it looks like.

Turn your exposure down or set it to spot exposure (or both). I have my EV on -2. Spot Exposure (if the 10 has it) will have the camera properly expose the shot based on a narrow defined spot (like outside the windshield) instead of trying to expose the whole shot (like the majority if the frame which is dark which is the inside of your car).

I'm not sure I'm willing to inflict crappy video of crappy driving on the august members of the forum Maybe after next event if I can get the video part a little better. As for the driving, I'll give my driving a stern talking to later this week about sucking less

No worries. I'm looking to borrow a Hero 8 so I can practice capturing my terrible driving. I'll post it up here when I do it.

Thanks, I'll try these. The 10 has spot exposure, does that need to be set every time? I got it set but I don't think it stayed that way after turning it off and back on.

Your settings should remain. Mine does. Secondly, the one touch turn on + record setting is great for this use case.

Agreed, -2 EV worked better when I tried, but I still preferred my older DJI Mimo Action cam's video quality, and got back to it.

Thanks for the tips, the video is better, though still not great. I'll look over the settings again, but at least I got something useful. Pretty sure this is at 1080P/30FPS/-2 EV.

Yeah you don't need -2ev, that's too aggressive.

Do a few tests even at home not around a track. I think you'll find -1.5EV is all you need. -2 is too underexposed, but at least you can see the outside!

Depending on software- you can change exposure in post. You can fix underexposed, not so much overexposed.

Good point, but for now I'd like to avoid extra work, I just want something good enough that people can comment on the driving part. Or maybe not

I'll try dialing back to 1.5 per gcmak and see how that looks. One other thing, is it my imagination or is the video just generally blurry? I don't see any obvious thumbprints on the lens, so that's not it.

I agree there does look like there's a haze. I think you can twist off the lens cover and see if there's any haze/film inside/outside.
If you're using pro mode, you could try to increase the sharpening (though I know that's not necessarily going to address what you're seeing).

So I sorted out my problem of the videos being blurry.

In short, "Bryan is an idiot"

You may recall the GoPro is new. So is the protective case. I went to clean the lens and the case carefully and found a big ol' thumbprint on the case over the lens. Then I realized I missed removing the clear protective film on the case.

For anyone else using a newer GoPro I did find one other setting to use, and that's to turn on Landscape Lock. The below vid from this past weekend's NJ Pro looks pretty good now, so feel free to comment on my crappy driving rather than the lousy video The settings are 1080P/30FPS/-1.5 EV/Narrow/Landscape Lock
