Subaru Added Security -suggestions!

Hi everyone,

I got my BRZ in April and today received the “Added Security” offer from Subaru. Took a few pics from the brochure and wanted to ask you guys if it is worth to get this based on the cost they ask. I already hit 8500 miles . Since we have the manufacturer warranty, I am not sure if it’s really important. You can also see the coverage details in the pics.

Please, let me know. I have only 15 days to chose.

Thanks

Extended warranties are never 'worth it', but that doesn't mean you should never get one. Companies that offer them spend a lot of time and effort calculating the likelihood and cost of repairs that may occur over the lifetime of the offer and ensuring they are charging much more than that on average to meet acceptable margin. Over the course of your liftetime, buying extended warranties will most likely be a money losing decision.

This does not mean though that buying this particular one is a bad idea. Odds may be in their favor for the thousands of cars they cover, but 1 blown engine for your 1 car and suddenly this one was a bargain. I would weigh your risk tolerance and ability to absorb a financial shock. If a catastrophic failure post warranty would cause you to be severely financially burdened or put your ability to support yourself and family at risk then it's worth considering. If you have the financial ability to absorb the cost, it's probably going to make more sense to pass them up. To some, even if they can afford it without destroying their lives, the peace of mind is worth the cost. Just don't expect a lifetime return on investment.

My first reaction is dude they just want to scam you.
But.... as long as it really covers a clutch job like 100% it's worth it.
But I would get that in writing before I go with any plan.
Really the fine print on what it will and will not cover.

From what they told me 5 years ago, it doesn't cover the clutch. The only major expense seen by a lot of people on this forum not otherwise covered by recall or appearing well within warranty periods would be the clutch set. Personally, I wouldn't imagine there is much to gain from an extended plan such as this (aside from all of the financial concerns well noted in previous posts). I live in Michigan so I see a crap ton of salt, potholes, and other generally car-destroying stuff. The only thing I've dealt with at 5 yrs / 110k miles are my exhaust gaskets rusting away right around 100k miles. $30, a jack, two jackstands, and 1 hour of time (plus $50 in common hand tools) is all that separated me from fixing that issue. Definitely cheaper than any extended warranty and I'm not sure my issue would have cropped up in time anyway.

I doubt they will cover the clutch. All I see listed is the flywheel. Plus they can always state abuse on an early clutch and get out of it.

So true. That's why I said to get written on paper. I highly doubt any dealership would agree.

The clutch disk is a consumable and not covered.

It's the same reason brake pads aren't covered.
