Yea, two of our neighbors are retired nurses, and husband of one is a medical lab certifier.

them plus two micro-biologists I worked with for 27 years all say the distancing and masks are silly and do nothing to prevent the spread of this virus.

Also interesting, the 2 micro biologist swear this virus has every sign of being man made. These are some of the smartest people I have ever met.

Interesting.

There are two things I will address in relation to this statement.
1/ Experts can be wrong. All evidence, papers can be questioned. I have read of a Nobel Prize winner who went on to make silly claims that were refuted.

2/ A quick search of "covid man made evidence" leads to lots of links saying it is man made and other links saying it is not. I am suggesting the man-made news is more sensational than the refutation.

I have read two articles, University of London Professor Angus Dalgleish and Norwegian virologist Birger Sorensen conducted the study
and COVID-19 virus has properties that have never been found in nature before
and both of these articles link to this paper.
Both articles mention a conclusion that is NOT in the conclusion of the paper. The paper is about vaccination development and from my quick skim through of the paper nothing to do with the claims of the news articles.
My take: misinformation.

Fact check: Coronavirus not man-made or engineered but its origin remains unclear
"Our ruling: Partly False
We rate the claim that COVID-19 may have originated in a Chinese lab as PARTLY FALSE. Suggestions that the novel coronavirus was manmade or has been engineered for use in bioweapons in a high-security biomedical laboratory in Wuhan, China, are untrue, based on scientific research since the virus began its global spread. Beyond that, however, investigations continue into where COVID-19 began, and no conclusions can be drawn, nor has evidence been presented, that definitively explains the pathogen’s origin. Circumstantial evidence suggests the virus could have escaped from the Wuhan lab due to a lapse in safety measures."
My take: more information from reliable sources required.

In conclusion, I am not saying the your 2 micro biologists are wrong but I am saying the basis for their opinion is unknown.

I would certainly like to know what source of information your friends are basing this opinion on and the reasoning behind it.

I'll say one thing, if Covid19 was an escaped bioweapon, it's an ineffective one.
The last people you would go after in a war are the elderly.

The virus could have escaped from a research lab, but there has been no tangible evidence presented.

I'm guessing it started from the same source as SARS, since they are such closely related viruses. We had a SARS outbreak in Toronto if anyone is familiar. Hospital employees died as well as patients and it wreaked havoc for awhile in 2003 and there were 38 deaths. The issue was, they had no rapid antigen test to distinguish from flu or pneumonia so it spread in a hospital setting. The result was 38 fatalities with 67% fatality over age 65. It was traced to have traveled here from Hong Kong.
Even if they did trace the outbreak to a Chinese lab breach, who are you going to punish? A few executions to add to the overall situation?

Interested in what info these microbiologists are basing their suspicions on. We have already seen the viruses evolve insitu, so who knows.

Some experts are going against their own knowledge because it doesn't align other beliefs and it is pretty sad.

I have a lot of friends who don't think masks do anything either. I always tell them if they want to see how effective it is, it's a pretty simple test if you want to check. Sneeze into open hand, sneeze into open hand with mask on. They can argue about the effectiveness of masks all they want but saying it doesn't work is just plain wrong.

Idk. It has disrupted the entire world pretty effectively.

In regards to engineering this, the genome was done very early on. Thereís some telltale signs that you would not use in engineering the vRNA for it.

I just ask to consider the virtual lack of influenza this past year.

I've personally had formal training in, and professional experience designing solutions for control of airborne hazards. Think chemical/biological/nuclear warfare and cleanrooms.

If we really gave a shit about promoting best practices we would see real money spent on campaigns to train the general public in their proper use. Then that opens up yet another shitstorm of controversy because "proper use" is a total PITA.

Still, being that this is a numbers game, every bit helps and it really does come down to the weakest link.

I don't ask or argue. I'm just a retired accountant, I have no idea who is right and who is wrong. I don't think anyone really does. I've been following CDC guidelines because it is all we got. Maybe time will tell what is right and wrong.

I think the most accurate conversation I have had with anyone about covid was when I was talking to my GP. I asked him the same questions that some here think they know the answer, one way or the other. All he kept saying is "we really don't know".

Listen to Morpheus? Listen , I lost my father to Covid19. My major at U of T was a micro/biochem duo, but despite my personal interest, did not continue or pursue employment in that field. However, whether we, or you or I know everything or not, we know there is an infectious disease, becoming more infectious as it mutates. We all want to live to see this end, young or old, sick or healthy. The older you are, or perhaps the more you are bonded to older persons or maybe just the more compassionate you are the more you aknowledge the seriousness, and we give up our complete freedom temporarily in certain ways for the preservation of life. Simple as that.
