the limit of a vehicles lifespan is directly related to how willing one is to maintain and fix what's broken on the entire vehicle.

every one of these 'million mile' stories, they go through multiple transmissions, sometimes engines, and dozens of other parts.

“Things are gonna break,” says Hudson. “I just fix it as it needs it.”

follow the owners manual service intervals, and be aware of the normal noises. if it's making a noise that's not normal, be willing to either fix it, or pay someone to fix it.

Only flog it when it's up to temp. Take it easy when it's cold.

subaru's gained a notion in the modding community for being unreliable because guy's wanted to turn the boost up on their wrx's, and still expected to do hardcore, grippy tire, full rev, 0-100mph launches. then they were shocked when the transmissions blew up, or had head gasket issues from turning the boost up too far...

Some individuals had issues so they apply their own experiences across the board. They just ignore the millions that had no problems and focus on their individual experience supported by anybody else they can dig up that had the same.
The reverse applies when you get people saying that the Honda XXX or Toyota YYY were "bullet proof". Thiers was fine so they band together with others of the same opinion and ignore everybody that had issues.
It is simply human nature to find the people that support your opinion and say it is the truth.

I got 250,000 miles out of a 1985 VW Golf.

Couple of clutches, lots and lots of front boots, changed all belts and hoses every 70000 miles .

Finally got to a point where there were 5 $500 items that needed fixing. AC condenser one of them. Sold the car for $900 and bought a new 2000 Passat. Got 145,000 out of it.

Our cars are Subarus.

I had a Suzuki(18 yrs) that made it to 170,000 miles. Motor & trany was changed.

OP, as most said, just follow maintenance.

I use to have a '94 Accord back in the day,and one morning I was dropping it off for some repair work(don't even remember what was being done),and another mechanic from another shop who knew the owner was bs'ing about customer's expectations. The one thing that will always stick with me is when he said that every used car owner should allocate around $2500 per year strictly for auto repair and maintenance. You figure aside from just oil changes, you also have other stuff like new tires,shock/struts,tie rods, ball joints,CV boots/axels,tune ups,and the list goes on and on,and it's easy to see that this is a pretty good amount to have in reserve, and that's not even counting the unexpected repairs.

Personally,I feel like that theory should kick in around 100k miles on any car,and maybe even sooner for a lot of cars out there.

I 'm just over the equivalent of 200k miles on my 2013 and have been doing the same thing most people have noted here which is routine scheduled maintenance and checking into things when something feels off. You'll know your car pretty well by now so it should come somewhat instinctively when something needs to be addressed. Aside from routine stuff, other work that needed to be done on mine thus far is a rear wheel bearing, preventative clutch replacement from a failing TOB, failed alternator and one bad coil pack.

Yea just the single swap out at the equivalent of 130k miles. It wasn’t horrendous when I did it, just a minor noise but based on the other experiences people on this forum went through I knew it was the safe bet to just get it done with.

NA Subarus have been pretty damn bulletproof from the 90's onward aside from having a bit of oil consumption issues (whether it's leaking out the seals or burning it). This car has been pretty decent, I have reasonable confidence to 150k miles, 200k miles is a question mark imho but it's not too expensive to fix if you don't go through a dealership and order all new parts.
