Take a look at this video

it is an 86 with the Automatic taking a quick lap.

Now, I know that some (most) people on this website would argue that a manual is the only way to get this car. I've heard the argument that you aren't really driving unless you drive a manual. But this video shows an extremely competent automatic, with shifts better than most of us could pull off on a consistent basis.

I'm getting the auto because I don't want to deal with it every day. Maybe it would be different if I was going to track it.

What gearbox do you want, and why?

. WOW that auto sounds great, and it seems to shift quickly too! Thanks for sharing, but I feel that this will end up being overwhelmingly in favor of manuals. +1 for autos.

i've ordered mine in auto.. for 2 reasons.. one being the flappy paddles.. and the second being i'll be letting the mrs drive the GT86 (ie. drive me back from the pub)

Not a bad reason, although I'll have her learn manual on the 86 (she's eager to learn). Manual for me!

Auto for 3 reasons.
#1. So I can play with the paddles.
#2. So the wife can drive it.
#3. When I'm feeling lazy I don't have to shift it.

ah i keep forgetting this is predominantly a US forum .. yeah she drives manuals no worries (here in the UK).. its just she's not exactly mechanically sympathetic!

Same but I am in the US. My wife can drive a manual, doesn't mean she should

Shifting is fun 'most' of the time, but some autos now have faster times through the gears. We'll need to wait for a thorough test result and tactile opinion 1st if the auto is anything to consider except based on need.

There's manual (hydraulic actuated clutch), there's Automatic (hydraulic torque converter), Dual Clutch/SMG (Machine actuated clutch), and there's CVT (belt driven drone).

Guess which one of those lets you directly control torque applied to the wheel. (hint: the simplest one)

So, that's why manual transmissions are still around. It's not the shift speed, it's not the smoothness, it's all about applying the engine's power to the ground.
