Get ready June 2 reveal date for something, likely the North American GR86
235464792nd repetition that:
-Toyota started the Supra-Z4 project, BMW was initially not interested. The reason they asked BMW is because they make the best inline 6 motor on the market. -The car’s wheelbase, Track width, and even tire size were set by the Toyota design team, and BMW tailored their architecture to it. Even the suspension arm lengths were set by Toyota. That weird rear toe-out on compression thing that it does that everybody hates? No BMW does that. -despite most parts having a BMW logo on them, the Supra is exactly how Toyota wanted it to be, both mechanically and styling. Just because you don’t like it, doesn’t mean it’s because of BMW. -the turbo Supra mark 4 was 40k USD in 2001, 70k in today’s money. The new Supra is a bargain compared to the old one. OK, OK.... was just trying to demonstrate that different people have different perspectives. As for me, my last "sports car", really a sport coupe, was a 2007 328i which had a published 0-60 of 6.3 seconds. I liked the performance of that car so with the GR86 having slightly better acceleration, I anticipate that I'll like the performance as well. But as mentioned previously, straight line acceleration is just one factor and as for me, it's certainly not the most important one to enjoy driving any particular vehicle.

Agree technology marches on, but fun is timeless IMO. A friend of mine has an ap2 s2k that does 0-60 in the mid 5's, similar to my e85 FR-S (and this gen 2 BRZ). At least in the canyons/backroads, that's plenty to have fun with when you've got a lightweight, responsive RWD chassis. That doesn't change just because cars as a whole have gotten faster. Just my 2c.

I dunno about you but i dont think the definition of "sports car" changed in the past 50+ years, nor do i think it had been redefined every time some 0-60 number is considered slow.

"Fun" is completely different topic though now isn't it. I should have said modern cars to make a blanket differentiation against cars from the 1960s. haha |

Agreed 100%. Most people who think these cars are too slow simply haven’t driven them or driven them hard enough.

I still had my 6.8 liter LS3 FD when I bought my BRZ. That was a fast car (185mph in standing mile and 130 in the 1/4 in its previous 6.0 LS2 form). I took BRZ to the track that year and got into season-long time-trialing battle, sold FD at end of year because BRZ was more fun on the street, and plenty of fun at the track as well what with there being competition...

But fast cars are fun even when they’re heavy. Different kind of fun. I’ll say again I LOVE small, lightweight handlers like the BRZ and the S2000. But. I am also pretty enamored with my son and DIL’ s scat pack shaker Challenger with the dynamics package. That whale of a sucker corners flat, and with 485 hp, it MOVES. It’s a pretty glorious time to be alive really with respect to performance cars. There are many that are an OUTSTANDING value. And we’ve seen nothing yet out of the coming electrification of performance. We’re probably just a relatively few years away from the damn Batpod...
Great time to be alive! |

I'm not going to sit here and tell you whether a Toyota made Supra would have been more commercially successful because no one knows that. But I do ask, what would you think if Chevy had a Ford motor in the new C8 Corvette because it would have been cheaper that way? Would it be forgivable because its a V8 anyways? |

Who gives a shit about the damn door chimes? It’s a sports car. For everything that matters in one, Toyota got their way. It would be the same car in all the ways that matter except for price. On a Ford motor in a Chevy? Hell yea I wouldn’t mind. They co-develop transmissions already so why not engines? The coyote is a better motor than the LT any day, but that’s besides the point really. If these collaborations keep the cars us enthusiasts want around, I’m all for it. The Supra is the most exciting car on a BMW chassis in 10 years. I support it 100%. If it had a manual, I’d look past the looks and get one ASAP. |
