@haute idle dip and partial stall / lights flicker was a problem I had when I had an ABS / CEL light for a broken ABS module, throwing me in limp mode.
This was on manual transmission though. Interesting that yours isn't throwing a CEL.

Maybe time for a diagnosis at the dealership! Also, try to get a video of the problem sometime, preferrably with somebody else filming while you're at the wheel.

yes, but it is an important way to verify the motor will stay running if it's not in gear.

also, there is absolutely nothing in your link that says that it is fundamentally damaging to the vehicle to put it into neutral while stopping. mostly just speculative 'what-ifs' about some rogue snow cone truck traveling at mach 1 into the back of you at a stop light, on the one-off chance you're first in line at a light and can do anything about it.

I always thought it was because putting it in neutral wastes gas. On a fuel injected engine, whenever you let off the gas to slow down, the ECU can cut fuel completely to aid in fuel savings and engine braking. By putting the car in neutral, the ECU has to keep the engine running since there is no inertia carrying it along from the car slowing down. So you waste gas by putting it in neutral... if gas savings are what people are looking for.

i've always found that argument interesting as well. it's technically correct. but then if the primary motivation is to 'save gas' then it should be reasonable under the same circumstance to blow through all stop lights to avoid altering speed too much to make the most use of the gas.
