It can vary quite a bit. With SCCA Track Night in America you can show up with an approved helmet and no experience and jump on track after a short safety meeting. I really don’t recommend that route and their events are kind of a cluster. I’d jump on motorsportsreg.com, find a local track day and org, and actually call or email and talk to them before signing up. Pay a bit extra and get one that has an included class. I’d also recommend flushing and rebleeding with dot 4 brake fluid.

Finding Motorsportreg changed my life. +1 to just browsing that and seeing what is out there. Recommend autocross first if you haven't done it, less prep, lower speeds, less cars on track and still pretty fun. A lot of guys in my local SCCA and PCA chapters do both AX and Track and can help guide you to the right events.

That's good to know.

I checked with the track people and they said that there was an additional requirement for ME.

I think I very much rather have a pro take me around the circuit and then teach me about the limits of the car. Its $195 for the class session so I’m probably going with that. My only concern is that my seat doesn’t quite hug me like I would like when Im taking aggressive turns. Or maybe I need to loose weight so fit more snug on the seat.

Keep in mind a lot of instructors are not “pro’s”, they usually club guys there to teach you how to navigate a track safely with other traffic. Speed and technique are usually not their first priority, it’s always safety. The last time I had an instructor was to get solo qualified for a track I hadn’t driven before, he was a 19 year old kid and he didn’t want me to take TC off. Granted he was probably a great driver, but he really could not articulate his instruction very well and for the most part he sat in the passenger seat and we BS’d over the headsets. Take note and practice what they are teaching you, but keep in mind it’s based on average ability and centered around you being able to bring your car home in one piece.

What’s your waist size? I am about a 30” and the stock seat held me pretty well. The main thing I noticed is I had to push down on the dead pedal a lot to hold myself up in corners and my knee would get tired and sore.

Im a 34 waist if not more depending on the brand. The problem is my shoulders which are broad. Ive been thinking about a bucket seat but is a little too soon to be sacrificing safety on the road for comfort on 2-3 track events.

Never seen a lunar halo before. But I took the dog out and look up and this is what I saw. Beautiful stuff.

I was super lucky to get paired up with an experienced spec-E30 guy. Had his own car there for test-&-tune. He sized me up and quickly had me focusing on specific exercises for each corner/lap. It's been years but I sure would like to spend another day having him coach me.
