Used prices

I've been helping my brother in law search for a used 2017 BRZ Sport-Tech (both regular and RS/PP models), and I've got to say I'm surprised by how the prices for these cars have held up.

When I returned my lease in 2016 for my '13 BRZ, the residual was about $17k (I would've bought it out if not for a not-at-fault accident, and the resultant headaches that would've meant in a private sale).
I definitely wasn't expecting the 2017s to still command $20k+ prices, but that's exactly where the market is: the only cars I saw below that were either high mileage or had reported accidents, or were in terrible shape (i.e. buy-here-pay-here lot specials, with rust and missing trim pieces, or modded ones with questionable mod choices).

We ended up paying $22.5 for a clean and lowish-miles car from a Subaru dealer (didn't manage to negotiate anything - they'd done their homework and knew that these cars aren't staying unsold for long). We had agreed with one seller to buy one with 82k on the ODO (highway kms according to him) for $17k, but he reneged on the agreement and traded it in to a dealer instead.

I was hoping that with the 2017s starting to see lease returns, and post-COVID, we might see some deals, but 'twas not the case.

I'd imagine that the following factors might have come into play:
1) Most of the people who wanted this car got them by 2013, 2014, and probably didn't see the value of upgrading to 2017+ so there are just fewer 2017+ models out there
2) The sales momentum had dissipated for these later model years leading again to lower supply
3) Post-COVID19, fewer people want to take public transit, so more are opting for used cars (not specific to this car in particular, but this is what I've heard from friends who sell used cars)

In anycase, if anyone is planning on selling, it looks like the market for these is pretty strong!

As somebody who just bought a 17 PP in California last week, I'd say you're right on the money.

Canyon driving is a viable social distance activity and so many other things are off limits right now.

Nice! It's good to see demand for these cars is still there... Hopefully enough of us also buy/lease new to justify more sports cars

The car market in general is a little higher right now, Im seeing prices the same as a year ago, no depreciation.
The lowest point was april/may when dealers couldnt get people to come in. In fact I saw the exact same cars being relisted for a higher price once people started getting out again.

Yeah i thought the prices would be a little bit lower than they are now.

Im debating whether i should try to jump on the bandwagon now or just wait till next year after a few things in my life sorts itself out (and covid).

I'd wait till next gen comes out because then first gen cars are probably gonna flood the market as people decide to upgrade which will push the value down.

Or the next gen doesn’t live up to the hype and the first shot up in value since you can’t get them anymore.

Or it is just about the same and nothing changes.

Waiting is a crap game when looking for a discontinued car.

ill probably be waiting.
Less to do with the next gen car, more to do with a bunch of other stuff is gonna take priority over getting a new car right now. Plus hopefully a dark blue GT manual shows up on the used market....something that really hasnt been seen here (My options right for a used 86...let alone a GT....is typically black, white, or grey.....)

LOL - unfortunately the BiL really wanted a 2017+ (I tried to float the early models + mods option)

I actually saw a lease-takeover deal that looked pretty good: 2019 BRZ Sport-tech RS (performance pack) for about $440/mo (25 payments remaining) and a buyback of just under $16k.
I worked that out to ~28k with taxes in for a 2019 BRZ RS, with the flexibility of turning in the car on lease return if the 2nd gen turns out awesome.

Sadly the guy flopped/ghosted.

I'd probably just keep scouring Kijiji/Autotrader/Leasebusters for this sort of deal (but make sure you calculate the total cost at the end, because there are some bad deals out there with 30-40 months remaining of $500 payments)

The only deals right now are for the 2013s, a lot are less than $10k, but we know the reason for that....

Canadian Used prices are similar to those in the US.
Statesiders should be up here with their +32% dollars cleaning us out.

I don't know how importing a car works, but if it's like any other bureaucratic government nonsense i've dealt with the car would have to be damn near free to deal with that headache.
