Well the secondary effect is more due to the fact that people learn through repetition. Something doesn't have to make sense if you hear it enough times, it just sticks.

It's an evolutionary consensus forming mechanism and it works out when Jim eats some berries, dies, then bob eats some berries and also died. There might still be one or two people that strongly believe these berries are still good to eat, but our prehistoric community learns very quickly through gossip that those berries kill people.

Fast forward to the internet and the idiots (and troll bots) we are exposed to outnumber the amount of people we know in person. So it seems like "everybody" is saying something when only a small percentage of the population is making shit up. Like the proud village idiots before them, they find the most densely populated space, put up a soap box, and shout nonsense from the top of their lungs. The average human psyche can ignore a few of these because "that guy over there is a bit kookoo lol". But a crowd of 10-20k marching down the street shouting the same thing innately makes normal people take what is being said more seriously.

TLDR: It's not making more idiots, it's just our society hasn't adjusted for the amount of idiots the internet has allowed to gather in one place.

Oh I have to WANT to be one it isn't automatic. The only reason that I would be is if you are one to me first though.

Social media is an outlet for narcissism and self promotion. I've met people who are essentially homeless yet have Instagram accounts. For myself, the fewer people who know I exist , the better my life is.

Absolutely! I've had this issue more than a few times. I've known someone from high school or college and I disagree with something they post and it instantly disintegrates the friendship. Hell, I even called my dad out on a stupid, and blatantly ignorant post, and he took it to heart. Don't even get me started on the various 'groups' pages that flood FB. It's very hard to have productive discussions on social media because people can hide behind the screen. Its far different when you call them out in person. Though in my experience, it's just as bad so

Yea, see that's the difference. i would never air my family's laundry in public, virtual or in real life. Private stuff needs to stay private, and family disagreements are private. (Not calling you out @weederr33 just using your post as a launching point).

If I disagree with a family member I do it in private, even if it means just nodding my head and saying "ughm OK" in public.

I have a niece who tries to air her family drama on Facebook almost daily. Everyone in our family who does Facebook has defriended her at this point. Thing is she's nothing like her angry young woman online persona in person.

When is the next FT86 meet-up?

God only knows.

You weren't around yet for my first two trips to the PNW. Was supposed to be there again last October but we all know why that didn't happen. Going to try again this October if they will let me across the border by then.

I can see where LinkedIn has some value, but most are just echo chambers for people to stroke their ego and receive the positive reenforcement they crave.

This site is the only one I frequent, and it’s kind of the same thing, but we’re here because we all have pride in our cars. I agree with earlier comments that it’s largely generational. I fall into the “old millennial” crowd myself, but I just didn’t gravitate to the digital world like my peers did. Now I’m really beginning to feel my age because I just don’t understand the young people anymore. The LIVE on the Internet. For a lot of them, their self-esteem is directly tied to their social media.

I began attending college recently, and it was really eye-opening the first time I had to do a group project with people who were born the year I graduated high school. Many of them couldn’t go a full minute without checking their phones.

There's certainly some freedom and liberation being anonymous in a flashy culture.

Also not understanding what an echo chamber all of it has become. My YouTube account really only recommends 4 channels anymore. If I didn't know better, it would be easy to assume from that there's no one that has a different opinion...
