Still seems ridiculous they don't all have the extra cupholder, based on looking at the two center consoles side by side. I don't see what you get by not having the cupholder?

It is, but the Toyota models should be the same.

Only the automatics get the extra cup holder. Unless you do what I did and replace the center console and rear cup holder assy. The rear cupholders are specific to their consoles.

The trim is cheap. The cupholder assy is >$200.

So there's a rear cupholder for MT and different one for AT (with front cupholder)? Could you possibly take picture of the now left-over MT part (rear cupholder)?

Good news! I already took pictures of them together when I installed and did a how-to post here.

But here is a shot of the 2 cubbies together. MT on the right.

I'm sure they felt as though that cup holder on MTs was sorta pointless, it is in a rough spot with shifting gears but I'm definitely going to swap the consoles like above, would be nice to have a little cubby separate from the bin for keys and whatever.. though it looks like the area around the bin on the autos rises up a little more than on the console on manuals, I wonder if that would be annoying when shifting

You may have stumbled upon a credible reasoning for the difference between AT and MT; engineers felt for MT that the arm resting on the middle console was best not interrupted by a cupholder nor height difference?

I don't think there is any question that that is the reason. The engineers didn't want you putting anything there that could interfere with shifting. Very paternalistic German thinking (they took forever to even put cupholders in cars because they felt like you shouldn't have anything distract you from driving) - but I still hate it. Let me f-cking decide what does and doesn't interfere with my shifting.

I honestly really like the cleaner look of the console without the cup holder. Then again I can count the amount of times I’ve used a cupholder in my old BRZ on one hand. My German Cars have trained me well.

I wanted it initially to hold my phone. Now that the Motorola MA-1 is out, there is almost no need for it. A drink bottle or the rare cup in there doesn't bother my shifting.

well the cupholder is the one thing but what he was referencing in my post, is I want to know whether the substantial lip behind the 3rd cupholder would get in the way of shifting. the height difference between arm rest/rest of center console with the MT is quite minimal in comparison.

No. You can test this out just sitting in your car. Just sit with your arm on the shifter and note where it is, then extend your elbow all the way out to be centered on the console. Where is your arm more comfortable at? elbows out all the way, or at an angle?
