Registry Thread: Failure After J02 Recall
Quote:
Maybe the reverse lockout plate is loose? If loose and out of place it would rattle and be hard to get into 1st and 2nd. |

Quick update....
Perhaps my four-month long saga is about to come to an end. Dealership called me late yesterday afternoon to tell me that my car is finally ready...about to head out and pick it up. Wish me luck. I'm not even sure I'll recognize it....I think it was sort of a silver/gray color.

PLEASE take discussion to the discussion thread(s). This is supposed to be a REGISTRY ONLY. The goal here is to quantify and have in one place all the post-recall failures not a bunch of casual conversations that muddy the waters and waste people's time. What value are you getting out of this "Registry"? Without having any comparative data knowing who had failures is meaningless. Are they 5% of the repairs? 50%? 90%? It is just fear mongering and misinformation without any real information involved. We don't even have dates for when the work was done to be able to see if the failures trended early in the cycle or have carried on. There have been no serious failures reported in the last couple of weeks. Is that because most are done, they figured out how to do it right or people just stopped having it done? Knowing why they have dropped off would be more valuable than just knowing they happened but we will never get that info.

Another One
Vehicle Mileage: 58,363
Vehicle Make: Scion Mileage After Recall Performed: +1000 Symptom(s): (As reported on NHTSA) RETURNING HOME ON A 134 MILE TRIP. PRIMARILY HIGHWAY/EXPRESSWAY. VEHICLE IN MOTION: AFTER REFUELING, A QUIET, RHYTHMIC KNOCKING SOUND APPEARED DURING ACCELERATION. WITHIN 5 MILES, THE SOUND BECAME INCREASINGLY LOUDER. DEFINITELY A 'METAL-ON-METAL' TYPE OF NOISE. MINUTES LATER, OIL LIGHT BEGAN TO FLICKER, FOLLOWED BY CHECK-ENGINE LIGHT AND LOSS OF TRACTION INDICATOR. NO CHANGE IN TEMPERATURE OR FUEL QUANTITY. NO CHANGE IN PERFORMANCE, HANDLING OR DRIVING CONDITION. DECREASED SPEED (DOWNSHIFTING), TO PULL OF TO SIDE OF ROAD AND THE ENGINE STALLED. PARKED AND CHECKED UNDER HOOD; NO SMOKE, SMELL OR ANYTHING OUT OF THE ORDINARY. WAS ABLE TO RESTART AFTER MULTIPLE ATTEMPTS TO EXIT THE HIGHWAY AND PULL TO A SAFER LOCATION TO CALL TOYOTA ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE. WAS PICKED UP ON A FLATBED AND DELIVERED TO DEALERSHIP WHERE THE RECALL WORK HAD BEEN PERFORMED MONTHS EARLIER. I WAS INFORMED THAT THERE IS METAL IN THE OIL/OIL-PAN, EXTREMELY MUDDY OIL AND THAT A SENIOR TECH WILL BE VISITING TO FURTHER ASSESS. THERE IS A POSSIBILITY OF ENGINE-REPLACEMENT. AWAITING FURTHER INFORMATION. NOTE: ALL RECOMMENDED, SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE HAS BEEN PERFORMED DURING OWNERSHIP. Failure: Engine State: IL Is Dealership Offering Repair: Yes - At no cost to me UPDATE 5/25/19: Dealer provided a loaner and will proceed with teardown next week. Provided all parts are available after complete assessment, they're hopeful to have the repair complete within two weeks. UPDATE 6/11/19: Still waiting on the last of parts to arrive. Short Block is being replaced. Expected (possibly), the week of 6/24/18. UPDATE 6/20/19: One part remains undelivered. A Cam Shaft. They're now realizing the shortage and being manufactured. Repair is now pushed back to an expected date of July 6. Still have loaner vehicle from dealership. Really missing my car. UPDATE 7/27/19: Work is complete and I finally have my car back. Warranty covered all parts/labor. Short block, engine seal and gasket kit, front cover, cam shafts, cam shaft geas, chains and guides. Transferred all necessary components to short block. Cleaned and checked heads for warpage (OK) reused heads. Installed new head gaskets. Sealed and installed new cam housings, cams, cam gears. Performed cylinder head valve adjustment. Checked valve clearance. Out of spec and corrected. Replaced all valve shims with correct size. Rechecked and verified all valve clearance are within spec. Replaced all engine gaskets. Transferred all other components. New fluids. A/C recharge. Health check all OK. Test drove 10 miles and verified repairs. All OK. Last edited by AmphOne; 07-27-2019 at 10:41 PM. So an early repair before they changed the instructions. No doubt loads of sealant will be found inside.
