air conditioning will hurt gas mileage. 5 minutes of idling every day will destroy gas mileage. If they change the fuel blend that can hurt gas mileage. Transmission fluid not being changed can hurt gas mileage. So can oil and differential fluid being old.

There are a ton of little things that can affect it. Just make sure your car is actually running right first, and control what you can.

I'll join in with the "get a tune/re-flash" camp.

Since you bought the car used, it's hard telling what the former owner did to it.

20 mpg is just too low for average driving, unless you drive like @PetrolioBenzina -

Here's a good reset.

• Unplug the negative battery terminal
• Let the car sit for 20 minutes.
• Replug the negative battery terminal
• Turn the engine on WITHOUT pressing the gas pedal
• Allow engine to idle for 2 minutes
• Turn off engine

This will reset the ECU's learning curve, allowing you to teach it your driving habits. I had to do this after my last tune-up at the dealers. When I got the car back, the idle was way high. After the reset it was back to normal.

Good luck!

My fuel economy did not change at all when I installed my cat back. It wouldn't, because a tune isn't necessary for that.

You'll eat more gas when shifting above 4000 rpm. Shift between 2500-3800 rpm , then you should do better.

LOL, I get half of what some of you do, and my only worry is how to get it lower. Humf thinks I drive like a nut, but I just drive normally compared to the rest of the zombies on the road.

What other reason for a car like this than to put your boot to the gas and the brakes as often as possible?

The OP concern was with achieving a lower then expected MPG.

Some may say "go buy a Prius" . I'm not saying that, but read the above on what you can do to put your car in check.

You should not have to anything, they should all be the same. However, there does seem to be some significant mpg differences. I never saw 30 mpg in mine, even during break-in.

Oh you're not the OP haha my bad. Still if you change your car and don't tune it I'm not sure why that would do any good.

I get almost exactly the same 8.8l/21gal as the OP with a header/tune but my driving is 90% 5-10 minutes trips and I don't really take it too easy.
Longer trips and driving normal it easily gets that 12+km/l or 30+mpg.

I did it 100% for the sound, because I understand that that's why you install a cat back. A good muffler will make a car feel faster without actually making it any faster, just by adding aural stimulation to the overall driving experience.

If you install a cat back expecting moar horsepowers and torques, you're wasting your money. The amount of restriction you lose by going from a stock muffler to aftermarket is not going to make enough difference to register on a dyno.
