If I lived in the GTA and was in stop and go for hours it would matter to me. Regular rural traffic isn't a problem.
Some spots on the 401 where it's 10kmh stop and go for hours a day. Depends on the area and traffic. Drivers from Ottawa/Toronto also drive like arseholes. If you leave any space, an impatient driver will cut in front of you. |

It depends on how bad the stop and go is. I drive an hour each direction in stop and go but I can keep enough distance that its more of a slow roll rather than complete stop and go for me. All the other people are stopping completely, just not me. I prefer the manual in traffic because I'm not having to constantly go between the gas and the brake the whole ride. I can normally just lift and by the time the gap closes they are all full throttle until the next shift in the accordion.
If it's a few inches at a time then MT could get old if that is all you use the car for. |

they do this plenty in chicago. my experience is that while a few cars do in fact jump into [MY] lane, they quickly jump back out for another lane that appears faster, but isn't, and i almost always catch up and pass them. then they would get more angry for not picking the faster lane, and start darting between lanes harder, and i'd get my own little soap opera of the human condition played out in my rearview mirror. the real trick to traffic is to stop fighting and assimilate to the reality that everyone is going in the same direction, and will eventually get there.

Unless you have a medical reason that requires you to have an automatic transmission; given the choice, you should get the manual. If for no other reason; every year sees a decrease in cars available with a manual transmission. You owe it to yourself, your children, and the car community as a whole to +1 the number of manual transmissions sold.

Riding ass is the biggest problem on the highway. Everyone rides ass in an attempt to keep people from taking their spot. That “spot” accounts for all of 250ms and like you said they will typically swap lanes until they are way behind you. They ride ass so close they can’t see the flow of traffic ahead so their choices on which lane to use sucks. This ass riding also makes it impossible for people to properly merge so eventually people have to force their way into traffic which causes more problems. Any fluctuation in speed ahead of you requires a more dramatic reaction which requires an even more dramatic reaction for the guy behind you that is also riding ass. Then you end up with this accordion crap.
I wish cops would stop focusing on speeding and instead focus on tailgating. Tailgating is dramatically more dangerous. They could generate way more revenue with tailgating than speeding because people do it right in front of cop. It isn’t like speeding where people slow down if a cop is around. Hell they will even tailgate a cop. The cops also tailgate which sets a great example. Imagine the impact it would have really f cops got serious about tailgating, hogging the left lane and improper merging. For example thinking they have to merge at the very beginning of the merging lane as if they will drive off the flat earth if they actually use the whole lane to actually get up to speed. Or completely stopping at the beginning of a 1/4mile long merging lane to wait for traffic to literally stop and beg them to come in. Sorry, I’m way off topic. Hahaha |

First post here, so hi folks! I got a used 2019 last Feb (with only 11,000 miles on it, thank you very much!). Has an AT, because I live in a dense, hilly, city, and spouse will only drive an AT. The AT is not nearly as good as a Porsche PDK (which shifts in like 100 milliseconds, based on a quick test drive), but I'm not sure shifts in an AT 86 are THAT much slower than in an MT. And it's kind of cool in sport mode, because hitting the brakes hard will automatically downshift. Here's a theory I have: to shift gears in an MT you need to depress/extend your left leg whilst rowing a gear selector with your right hand. That's a fair amount of body movement. But with an AT in manual mode, the car MAY be a little less unsettled since to shift gears, you only need a quick right hand push/pull to get to the next gear. |

my 2 cents:
Manual is more fun period. Dont care if autos are faster, shifts faster, or the car is ultimately faster, pressing gas to go bores me. theres no interaction. Shift paddles do little to sway me. Yes, as long as they're responsive (it better damn near shift instantly or better once i click the paddle) i approve of them, but im not picking an AT over an MT unless i start getting bored of MT or if MT isnt available. There are reasons to get one over the other but for me, its MT until i just dont feel like shifting much anymore. Oh in regards to the 86, yeah the AT is fine. the paddles are pretty responsive once you get on it. But to me, this is a car that needs to be MT. |

As for Northern CA hills, I drove a ‘91 NA MX-5 manual in SF for ~25 years on the original clutch.
