FI Clutch Feedback Thread

Hey Guys,
After having currently fitted an AVO stage 2 kit to my 86 i've started to find that my clutch is beginning to slip as can be expected once you go past basic power mods.
(its lasted about 4 months with several thousand km's of driving + a trackday and skidpan.)

I got to looking around for a suitable replacement for my planned mods and after searching through the forums ... found there was hardly any feedback from anyone on what they looked at/are using and i was ending up on other forums for different cars to look at generic feedback about the brand.

So i thought i'd post up my findings thus far and ask, what clutches are people on here running and how do you rate them.

If you could structure your answer it would help sort the feedback like:

- Short mods list (Turbo/SC/Stage)
- Power figures (WHP/Torque either current or planned)
- Clutch chosen (Brand)
- Clutch type (Heavy Duty/Puck/Button)
- Feedback (really heavy pedal, wear and tear, smell/noise)

Basic order of clutches in terms of power handling ability seems to be:

HD (fine if you dont plan on much more power)
Cushioned button (able to handle further power and slightly more driveable for daily than a standard button)
Button/Puck (handles the big power but can be unpleasant in daily use)
Twin/Triple plate (for really large power applications)

This is just from my independent research and im by no means claiming to be an expert so im happy for others to correct me and throw in your 2c's hopefully we can make a thread that helps other boosted peeps down the track.

We could even start a clutch listing of product with links:

EG

Cusco (Seems to be rebranded Exedy)
Stg 1 - Heavy duty
Stg 2 - 3 Puck

TRD (Seems to be rebranded Exedy)
Stg 1 - Heavy duty
Stg 2 - 3 Puck

Exedy
Stg 1 - Heavy duty
Stg 2 - 3 Puck
Stg 3 - Twin plate

Xtreme
Stg 1 - Heavy Duty

Competition
Stg 1 - Heavy duty
Stg 2 - Cushioned button
Stg 3 - 6 Puck Ceramic
Stg 4 - 4 Puck Ceramic

ACT
Stg 1 - Heavy Duty
Stg 2 - ??
Stg 3 - 6 Puck

Others

Thoughts?

I have the ACT Stg 3 - 6 Puck in my car, and I'm really happy with it. Handles the power/torque wonderfully. Picked it up for less than $600, and it's definitely a great buy.

265 whp/230 lb/ft (on a dyno dynamics, so numbers may be higher than shown based on other dynos)

There's an (unstructured) thread that should answer all of this http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=34635

I've used two clutches on mine - ClutchMasters FX300 and Exedy Stage 1.

The FX300 can take the power but is terrible for a DD. You'll get big calf muscles with this clutch.

The Exedy is a beefed up stock clutch. It didn't slip until 310wtq on the dyno. It is every bit as easy to drive as the stock clutch, just twice the pedal pressure.

Everyday I think about switching back, and just lowering the cars power. I would recommend this clutch to everyone making <300wtq.

Yes, the stage 1 flywheel is ~ 12 lbs or so.

Didnt think that exedy would include a FW for the price they're offering the clutch kit.

I use the ACT full-face with the street flywheel. It's noisy as hell, but otherwise nice. It's starting to burn up when I run e85, though. I'll be needing something stronger soon.

Really enjoy my Exedy St 1. After about a week of driving it's just like stock. I love the feel and it holds the power. The lightened flywheel it came with was just a bonus.

Edit: I've had it installed for 3 months. It's daily driven. Absolutely love it.

The fly wheel is usually included with the clutch "kit". Just check with the reseller to make sure. They can be purchased separately, though.

- Short mods list: http://brz.ridedomain.com
- Power figures: 320 whp / 265 ft-lb (Dynojet SAE)
- Clutch chosen: ACT
- Clutch type: 6 Puck Sprung Disc with Prolite Flywheel
- Feedback: Pedal pressure barely stiffer than stock, takeup point is much smaller so less area to slip the clutch, definite rattle noise at idle with a small load such as the A/C being on
