I believe it is based on the Farnsworth fusor tech:

Disruptive technology like the world has never seen.

Once "essentially free energy" is available it will change the world in ways we haven't even thought of yet.
How about self powering atmospheric water condensors or desalination plants that make pure water while filtering DT out of the water to fuel itself.
There could suddenly be fresh water in places that there wasn't before.

Deuterium mining will be the next biggest thing.

Wolfgang Hatz:

Quote:
Beginning February 1, 2011, Wolfgang Hatz is a member of Porsche AG Board of Management in charge of Research and Development, and is additionally Head of Engines and Transmissions Development for the Volkswagen Group.

Prior to assuming his board level position, Mr. Hatz was an engineer and project leader in engine development at BMW AG and at BMW Motorsport from 1983 until 1989. He joined Porsche in 1989 and was, among other functions, involved in the development of the Formula 1 engine. As an engineering graduate, Hatz took up a post at Knorr Bremse in 1993, and in 1995 became Technical Director of Motorsport at Opel before taking over as Head of Engines and Transmissions Development at Fiat in 1997. Hatz joined the Volkswagen Group in 2001. Here, too, he served as Head of Engines and Transmissions Development at Audi until 2009, having assumed the same function within the VW Group in February 2007.
Ulrich Hackenberg:

Quote:
From 2002 until January 2007, Prof. Dr. Hackenberg moved back to AUDI AG to take charge of the areas of Concept Development, Superstructure Development and Electrics/Electronics. During that time, he also developed the Modular Longitudinal Matrix.
On February 1, 2007, Prof. Dr. Hackenberg was appointed Member of Volkswagen’s Brand Board for Development. Under his leadership, the Transverse Modular Matrix was developed and the Volkswagen brand’s involvement in motorsport was restructured. Furthermore, three models were developed that won the Car of the Year Award – the Golf, the Polo and the Passat.
Since July 1, 2013, he has been a member of the Board of Management of AUDI AG with responsibility for Audi’s Technical Development. In addition, he is also responsible for the technical development of all the Volkswagen Group’s brands.

There is no reason to be skeptical.
The Farnsworth device is a patented Fusion source.
GE sells the fusors as a neutron source.

Dr Bussard had proven his design (The Polywell) worked and even proved that the design scaled exactly as his calculations predicted.
I have been following this stuff since the 90s.
If Lockheed says something works, then it works.

So basically, there will be unlimited, free, cheap, clean and sustainable compact energy reactors for everyone? Sounds too good? Who knows until we actually got a couple of these running. Anytime someone come up with something "out-of-this-world" break-through, there's always some kind of hidden side effects. There's no such thing as "free energy".

I'm all ears though if this means hope for humanity's ever growing thirst for energy.

Back on the topic of the VW debacle, here's a good article with better technical details. It also includes a link to the letter the EPA sent to VW. They are so fucked.

I have thought that a couple of times and at one point even started to look at who was complaining about VW and their own car mods. Decided I was being a jerk and gave up.

I was with Sandia Labs for a few years in the late 90s. Worked right next to the Z-pinch. That doesn't make me a SME but I've been following and guardedly hopeful about fusion for pretty much my whole life. The only other rational answer is population decline. Everything else is window dressing.

While true, this still doesn't resolve the diminished value argument.

I have many non-enthusiast friends that own VW, every one of them is angry at this whole fiasco.

Agreed Alex. I also have a friend NorCal environmentally conscious friend that bought a diesel VW who has a lot of German-American pride. She's now incensed and doesn't know what to do. She's thinking about selling it and divorcing herself from VW, but is worried that the value of her car probably just dropped thousands. No win situation for her. Told her to wait and see what VW comes up with.

To @MokSpeed and others, as far as people on the board who have modded cars go, believing in man-made climate change and being an enthusiast are not mutually exclusive and as Mav noted the scale is not comparable (a handful of enthusiasts vs. 11 million cars). Maybe though the difference is that enthusiasts willfully mod their cars where VW fraudulently did.

Are people here who believe in not gunking up the environment on a massive scale but running mods hypocrites? How about the peeps calling them out but also running tunes and mods? Pot meet kettle. To my eyes, often it takes time for people to understand the impact of their thoughts/actions well enough to come to an actionable opinion. What matters most is that they are open to discuss ideas counter to their own, and malleable enough to change.

In my case, I can see how think globally act locally applies to everyone, including myself. The discussion here has been largely productive. It's made me decide to change up some of my mods that's for sure.

I'm always considering non-CARB mods. I'm also cured of the desire every time I roll with my friends. Eyes water and I'm instantly reminded of the bad old days.

A good read of how this whole thing came about. Ironically, European regulators looking for stricter diesel emissions control were the first ones to discover it via a 3rd party testing lab in the US.

Guilty. The difference however is I chose to run a catless setup and would never tell anyone otherwise. VW lied on a massive scale; a lie of that magnitude is absolutely unacceptable.
